Serial number's
I Just got a C170A with a serial number in the 19900 witch should have went through the line in 1951 or so. but the airwouthyness
is dated 1956. Can someone probably older and wiser thin I help me figure this out?
Thanks Don.

O-man I did not think the photo would be that big....
Re: Serial number's
Until 1956 the airworthiness certificate was renewed each year with the annual inspection. When that changed, your airplane kept the last one issued. There are other reasons for later dates on an AW cert, but that's a likely explanation for one dated 1956.

Re: Serial number's
Dave has explained your aircraft C&A date perfectly. Most aircraft that had a C&A in 1956 still have a C&A dated 1956. Only those that have gotten a replacement for some reason, would have a newer date.
