Parts for 53C Dome Lite & Rudder Return Springs

Post by VernH »

Hi all,
I'm getting together some parts for 53C's upcoming annual. I'm waiting for the hangar to become available and then we can really get started. I need help sourcing a couple of items.
First, the dome light. I have the part number and traced that to an updated version that is not available either. What do you use? Can someone post a pic of theirs? I only have a socket and a trim ring so I'm not sure what it looks like.
Next, rudder return springs. I found the springs in a diagram but I haven't been able to locate the PN.

I just bought rudder springs from Univair. Brace yourself on the price. Here is a trick to removing the springs that's in a YouTube video.

What year is 53C? There were at least two dome lights that I know of.

Springs are P/N 0310196-3 (right) and -4 (left). They're about $40 each.

When I replaced mine, I removed the cables from the rudder horn to relieve tension on the springs. After that it was just a matter of reaching the springs through an inspection hole. I have long skinny arms so I had no problem.

Edit: Those P/N are from the 170B parts catalog. Not sure if the A uses the same springs.

They are the same for all models of 170

Thanks guys. At least the springs only have to be replaced every 70 years or so. Apparently.. Do you recommend replacing both of them while your in there? Sounds logical anyway.

I bought the rudder return springs from Aero Twin at Merril Field in Anchorage, AK about three years ago. I don't recall what I paid but I don't remember being shocked by the price either. One was more expensive than the other if I remember right. Might check with them.....
