48-170 Gas Tank Cover gaskets (Gas caps)

Post by SteveDuguay »

I have a 48-170 with broken gaskets on the gas tank covers. I am looking at Cessna original part #'s NAS143-8C (Washer); AN6227-10 ( O Ring); 0522538 (Gasket) and NAS43DD-8-8 (Spacer). Where would the best place be to find these Items???

Steve
You might try this post from 2004
http://www.cessna170.org/forums/viewtop ... 538#p10261
which was found by using search function with the gasket part number.
Not sure on the other parts which you should be able to reuse unless they are lost or damaged.

The parts you are looking for are for your gas caps.

The NAS hardware or the MS equivalent could probably be sourced from a NAS hardware supplier though I don't know how these parts would wear out needing replacement. The AN6227-10 or or the MS equivalent might be available from you local A&Ps stock or Aircraft Spruce. I think you mistyped 0522538 (gasket) and it should be 0322538. This gasket supersedes to 0322551 and is available from Cessna for $159.80. That is not a typo. I tried to cross reference the entire cap but that is not available from Cessna.

I would suggest you cut your own round gasket out of some readily available Bona-N rubber material of the appropriate thickness from you local auto supply for about $5.

Now that everyone understands your looking to improve your gas cap, the '48 owners specially, might be able to help you with their fixes as these caps are not the same as found on the A and B model. You might also look at the Cessna 140 sight cause they use the same cap.

Here is another link talking '48 gas caps: http://www.cessna170.org/forums/viewtop ... =24&t=1379

BTW the gas tank cover gaskets referred to by your title are different and found on the page before the gas caps in the IPC. The seal for this is 0520000-7 and is also not available. Again I'd cut one out of Buna N or Cork gasket material depending on what you find your original was made of.

There is a company in Tennessee that sells Gaskets and they can cut you a set of very nice ones for about $15 a piece. Check out EB-- they are on there. Not sure about the legality of them. Bill K

I think you mistyped 0522538 (gasket)
Bruce:
That is the part number (item 7-10) called out in the IPC. Can't seem to post the image.
Thx,
Dan

Yes Dan, as I learned from our earlier posts you linked it is incorrect on one page and correct on the other of the IPC. 0522538 goes no where, 0322538 supercedes to the $158 dollar gasket.

I fought with the gasket problem and water in the fuel tanks for years. I came up with an alternative. I obtained 337 approval for installation of Cessna 206 fuel caps and have not had a drop of water in my fuel since. I believe the 337 is available through the library, however if not and you are interested I'll be happy to send it to you.

Happy flying,

Are the 206 gas caps a direct replacement; or is there a modification required?
