Yoke Tubes

Post by acrocapt »

Currently restoring a '54 170B. The chrome on the yoke tubes is flaking off pretty bad. Wonder if anyone has a source for them or a source to get them rechromed. Also wondering if there is a source for the rivets that attach the yoke to the tubes. Almost looks like a long brake rivet. Thanks.

Welcome to the 170 website! Take time to search it and you will find a lot of good information. The search function at the top can help you from getting overwhelmed with too much info. You might start with this discussion to answer your questions. Also Googling part numbers often gives leads to finding rare parts like those semi-tubular rivets.

the rivets are expensive you might wish to use structural machine screws.
if you chrome plate your tubes be sure to bake them for hydrogen embrittlement.

Hey Joe. Personally I'd use screws or bolts as George suggest. My first 170 had screws with fairly flat almost flush hexagon heads. I never looked to see what kind of bolt they were i.e. aircraft structural or ACE hardware. But no one ever questioned them. Maybe I'll look through some AN/MS/NAS catalogs and see if I can identify them.

BTW folks Joe is a friend of mine who is also based at Quakertown PA (UKT) where my airplanes are. He and John Hess have something in common. They both own a 170 that I tried to buy at one time yet neither Joe or John was the persons who bet me to the purchase if either airplane.
CAUTION - My forum posts may be worth what you paid for them!

Thanks. Never thought of googling just the part number. Gave me a lead on a company called aviation sourcing solutions. Anyone hear of them? They say the tubes are available and they are doing a search for me now.

The original tubes had hard chrome applied. If you have them chrome plated at a bumper shop, they will be shiny chrome. There are aerospace platers that can apply hard chrome but I do not know any off hand but they are out there.

The rivets are sold by Cessna and they are expensive.

I know of several Cessna owners who have had occasion to replace the yokes due to vrs situations and they have replaced the rivets with the proper sized bolts and they work very well.

I've used them for seat rails on Stearmans and other aircraft parts. They know their business.

Yingling wants $864 for each yoke tube, p/n 0413213-1. I'm looking into making some tubes myself. If I used 316 stainless I think I could skip the hard chroming process. Could the engineers out there advise why this would or would not be a good idea when compared to using hard chromed 4130? I ran across this website which compares the two. Don't understand why 316 stainless has a range on various attributes.

While I am not endorsing the use of a stainless steel shalf but I would be checking the wall thickness of the tube and outside diameter. It’s use could be “legalised “ going through the the right channels . Talk to your friendly IA and DER and maybe some one the that has some common sense in the FAA. Opps shouldn’t have said that . I think some pipers had it fitted [stainless shalf] as my memory recalls as we had a issue with a piper with shuddering in the controls . After exhaustive checks it was found the shalf was binding on the shalf . WD40 fixed the issue .

I just had my control wheel tubes re-chromed this spring. And replaced the rivets with original Cessna rivets. The rivets ran about 80.00 for each one. The cost for my tubs to be chromed was 90.00.
