Kate Craddock Field, Burnet, TX, KBMQ

If you are there on a Wednesday or Saturday, stop in at the CAF Hangar and take a look at the museum, C-47 "Bluebonnet Belle", SNJ, and other assorted aircraft. The CAF folks go to lunch at noon and are a friendly bunch.

The FBO regularly has the cheapest gas prices of anywhere in the area. They will fill your tanks while you're at lunch.

McGeehee's Catfish just north of Gainesville, Texas on the OK side of the Red River has closed its landing strip. Too many crashes. Too bad, it was a great place to fly and eat catfish.

Lockhart, TX, 50R

Designated the "Capital of Texas BBQ" by the state legislature. This town was featured in the Wall Street Journal a couple of years. That article described Smitty's brisket as the best in the U.S.A.. That was all the information I needed to fly there from Medford, OR. I was not disappointed.

Needless to say, that meal cost me more than $100! I had to laugh though, when the next day, deep underground at Carlsbad Caverns I kept smelling BBQ each time my kids walked nearby. At Smitty's you order the meal and they cover you in aromatic wood smoke when the meat is pulled from the smoker. Delicious!

Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor TX (T74)is one visit you'll likely never forget. The FBO will loan you a car and their fuel is even cheaper than Burnet's. (Damm! Now I'm HUNGRY!)
http://www.louiemuellerbarbecue.com/

Ordering Tips
If you're planning a trip to Taylor to visit us in the near future, it doesn't hurt to prepare for the experience in advance...and we're here to help!
The first order of business is the protocol of ordering. We began as an extension of a meat market and those classic, old traditions continue today.

We slice your order to your specifications right in front of you, taking the meat directly from the pit.

Every customer is greeted at the counter with a sample of beef brisket - something to chew on while your order is prepared. Meals are served on a tray covered with a piece of white butcher paper. Our original barbecue sauce is served with each order and sliced bread (or crackers)pickels and onions are available at no charge.

Our beef brisket is available in two forms: lean (the dense, flavorful end of the brisket which has the consistency of steak) and moist (the marbled or fatty end of the brisket which is tender, juicy and melt in your mouth delicious). You can order it by the slice or by the pound.

Other meats sold by the slice /pound include pork tenderloin and boneless turkey breast.

We offer two types of ribs: pork and beef. Both are served by the rib / pound - and you won't believe the size of our beef ribs!!!

Our sausage is a family recipe of German origin created by Bobby Mueller in the mid-60's. Each sausage is made in-house and by hand containing 100% beef and tallow stuffed into natural casing (nothing synthetic going on here!). Each sausage is roughly 5" long weighing approximately 4 oz. and comes in three flavors: Original, Jalapeno and Chipotle.

We also offer bone-in rib eyes, pork shoulder steaks, boneless chicken breasts, and half fryers - all sold by the item. It's best to come early to grab one of these gems, they tend to go fast!

Our side dishes are made in-house fresh each day from old family recipes. Your choices include potato salad, coleslaw and pinto beans. All are sold by the serving, 1/2 pint, pint or quart.

To round off your meal, we offer a wide range of beer (bottle and draft) and sodas (cans and bottles) as well as unsweetened tea and lemonade.

Texas has many places just as memorable as Mueller's and it would make a fun trip to try as many as possible. Get your bucket down here and enjoy some "fine" eating. Just be advised it gets HOT in the summer.

Hey, I know y'all like Texas but don't you guys want to post on your own topics up north like, $100 Hamburger NORTH CENTRAL (ND,NE,SD,MN,IA) or $100 Hamburger MID WEST (OH,KY,IL,IN,MI,WI,WV). Somebody important up there is likely to miss your posts on this one.

$100 Hamburger

Had a hangar neighbor suggest this place and I'm sure glad he did! Magel's Restaurant, Paris, TEXAS. Fly into Cox Field (PRX) & borrow a courtesy car. Magel's is about 5 miles away and the staff of the FBO will gladly provide the simple directions. EXCELLANT chicken fried steak along with a really fresh salad & to kill-for yeast rolls. MMMM Good :D I met the owner out at the airport (J-3 Cub & RV-7A owner) who said his standard offer is that if you don't like the food, let him know and he will pay for your meal. I didn't have to ask to be reimbursed :!: Lots of other good looking items on the menu and friendly staff.

I saw a mention of it earlier in this thread, but no comments on it. I'd highly recommend Enrique's Mexican Restaurant located on the field in Ponca City, OK (KPNC). I don't recall if they serve hamburgers, but certainly worthy of a $100 enchilada or taco! Their chips and home made salsa are scrumptious. :P

Petit Jean State Park Lodge (Arkansas) is reopening after a $4.3 million upgrade of Mathers Lodge.

Maybe I'll go take a look see - try to remember what 30, 170's look like parked at the campground.
Well there's what it looks like - my avatar :D
