I have 'em and have had no problems in the 120 hours since installation. The engine has averaged 30 hours between adding a quart of oil. I used ECI's break-in procedure using Shell mineral oil for the first 10 hours. Phillips X/C 20W/50 thereafter. Steve OBTW, that is not the ECI recommended break ...

the 56-57 cowl the same as a C172 1957-60 ?

Richards is modded to fit the Franklin and I don't see why the 172 early cowl won't work.

I worked the refineries for years as a welder replacing pipe. Crude is abrasive and when pumped thru a line at high speed wears the interior of the line, after a few years the pipe will burst. oil speed in some lines will exceed 1800' per minute. Your stop in Billings is OK but then go direct Cutbank and follow Hgy #2 direct Sand point.

That will take you thru Marias pass at 5000". for about 50 miles,other wise your in the mountains all the way from Billlings to S/point

I find that many IAs are not willing to follow the guidlines in AC43,210.

I use all the part numbers from the 172 I, chaging circuit and the circuit wiring, and the FSDO excepts that as the engineering necessary. no probs yet.
