Re: uAvionix AV-30-C

I've flown about 40 hours behind the AV-30-C at this point. I figured I would post my impressions of it just in case anybody finds it useful. My 170 is VFR only and I am using the AV-30-C in the attitude indicator configuration as a replacement for my venturi-driven attitude indicator, directional g...

Re: AV-30c

Hot tip for anybody installing an AV-30-C: The installation manual tells you to leave pins 8 and 15 unconnected (MFG serial in and out). The service bulletin for upgrading to software version 2.1.2 directs you to wire a female DB9 connector to those pins. Even if your unit comes with the latest soft...

Re: Flying Magazine: "Approachable Aircraft: Cessna 170"

Glad I bought my 170 five years ago. At current prices even my ragwing would be hard to justify. My plan to sell it on and "upgrade" to a B model has gone out the window and over the horizon.

Notes on Dip Davis cowl latches and Camlocs

I had the Dip Davis cowl latch STC installed on '69V a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it. One thing I noticed but didn't worry about was that the heads of the Camlocs seemed a little "proud". I put over 100 hours on the airplane with no issues, but this weekend I landed ...

Re: Photo Album

There was a short window this year where the wheat was cut, the field was dry, and the manure hadn't been spread yet so I was able to land at my girlfriend's house.

Re: Cigarette lighter stud socket

Resurrecting this old thread. The repair I discussed above worked just fine, but after 4 years and nearly 300 flying hours the fit of my USB charger in the socket loosened up and there was also some light internal corrosion that was causing power to become intermittent. Part #05410-8 from the aviati...

Re: uAvionix AV-30-C

The probe is a Davtron C307PS. The Davtron manual recommends installing two feet out from the wing root on the bottom surface of the wing. With my metallized ragwing it wasn't convenient to place it there or anywhere further out, so I ended up putting it about six inches out from the root in the lef...

Re: uAvionix AV-30-C

It took a few months but I finally got to fly behind my AV-30. The DG precesses faster than I would like, but I hear there is is software update coming "any day now" that should help. You can configure three display layouts and cycle between them in flight. My first tries are attached, hav...

Re: test flew my new 170B today

My first instinct is always to reproduce the problem on the ground if possible. So I'd start with a pitot-static check to verify and quantify the error. An avionics shop can do it easily enough, or if you ask around somebody might have to equipment to DIY. If the error is still there, start dividing...

Re: What did you buy for your 170 today?

Installed a set of McFarlane hinge pins. Very nice, nicer than the hitch pins from Ace Aviation Hardware that were on there. I probably could have found a better use for $90 but I'm already spending a bunch to repair the upper door hinges so why not go all the way.

Re: uAvionix AV-30-C

If you want to fly IFR you would need two. The certified AV-30 can be installed AI mode (where it also provides a legal slip-skip ball) or DG mode. The AI mode can be configured to show heading but it is supplemental only. In AI mode it also does not provide rate of turn, so to be legal you would st...

Re: uAvionix AV-30-C

Mine is installed but not yet flown. I did the install, A&P decided to extend his winter vacation a couple of weeks, so the paperwork isn't done. The job itself was straight forward. I did the optional OAT probe and audio connection to the intercom. Obviously can't comment on how it works just y...

Re: Cessna 170 selling prices (split topic)

I'm sort of in the same boat. I had been planning to sell my '48 in the next year or so and start looking for the B-model of my dreams. At these prices I can't justify it.
