Re: Re-riveting the Elevator Bellcrank Bulkhead
I was thinking of something like https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pnpages/MS27039-1-05.php suitably sized, this specific one is likely too big. This is a pan-head screw with a shank (used for seat belt harness attachment). While I understand that the rivet fills the hole my concern is that the...

Re: Re-riveting the Elevator Bellcrank Bulkhead
Hey Miles,
Is it not possible to leave the screws in as the permanent fixture?
Gareth.

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
Go slow, just got back from a long trip. I’ll update thread asap. Nothing urgent happening here! Going to check the fit of the elevators to the Hstab and fabricate empennage fairings, possibly wire in USB power supply and GoPro mount in the cabin overhead. The list of things remaining to do is long...

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
Hey Gary, Something has to be bent. The hstab and fin are just sitting in place, loosely bolted. With bolts through both Fafnir bearings the rudder nose sits jammed on the top of the fin. The rudder has had a thump on its nose at some stage. There is no visible buckling on the rudder skins (which ar...

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
You're wanting to fill the gap with the shim, so that you don't induce stress in the structure when you tighten the bolts. The other end of both the horizontal stabilizer and the vertical fin are what sets the location of these subassemblies in the fore-and-aft direction. Thanks, that helps! Unsurp...

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
As this has turned into general info on the attachment of rudders I have a shim question: When shimming, what am I looking for? In other words, what is the angle/dimension/gap/something that I'm trying to set with the shims? This for: 1. Forward attachment of the horizontal stabilizer 2. Forward att...

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
I keep a 4 foot or so rod which I pass through the hinge points to check alignment before I try to mount rudders. Hopefully your bolts just drop in but Ive never had that happen. OK ... I have not yet snugged up the bolts on the fin as this is a test fit with brand new bolts and the parts have to c...

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
I’m not a 48 savvy guy but the oil bearing goes in the hinge for that position. The forward portion of the hinge fits inside the yoke Of the rudder. Often the yoke has wallowed out. Are you missing the hinge portion? I have the hinge part and yoke and none of it looks too wallerd out. Just need the...

Rudder Attachment Bolts
Gents, I'm test fitting the empennage components before sending some donor parts to paint and I'm struggling. First off the 48 IPC doesn't show any rudder attach bolts (that I can see). The 170B shows AN4-11A bolts though the two Fafnir bearings. In the 48 IPC item 20-69 is referred to as the rudder...

Re: cross reference for a bolt
I'm not massively pleased by the divot either (it's not as big as that makes it sound, but it is more than a scratch!) I'm having my inspector (he's also an FAA A&P) look at it and decide what to do! I do get the point about the special bolt. However, the other strut attach bolts are all AN8 and...

Thanks George,
I have Duane's docs which I am following closely and I made the call not to pull the floor and reroute up the B post.
Gareth.

Re: Straight 170 (Raqwing) Accident - Fuel Pump?
Not to blow smoke anywhere uncomfortable, but ... I would have had no idea about this problem with my aircraft but for this forum. The airframe and engine were purchased separately as Serial# 18513 had her engine (an O-300D) removed and sold separately after a minor incident in Florida. The engine I...

Re: cross reference for a bolt
I realize this is a post from the annals of time, but unfortunately I can't find where the links went to on the C120-140 forum which has been updated since then. I have trolled through the C140-IPC and it used this bolt (0422297) with an AN364-820 whereas the C170-IPC specifies an AN365-820. The 140...
