Going back to Brad's post (if I understand what you are saying), pull the power back with wings level and whatever the ASI says is best glide??? In that case, depending on your airspeed/trim combination your airspeed could do any number of things... it is not going to automatically go to 76 mph (whi...

The CEO of Cessna has published a letter addressing the manufacture of components of the Skycatcher in China. As they say... "its just bidness...". I guess Cessna corporation, in all of its glory, would not be able to manufacture a small airplane and make it affordable (relative term) othe...

Thanks for jogging my memory Rupert. I believe that was the degree that I was working on... then I started having children and put it aside. I was the only non TPS student taking the course. Back then we had to sit in a classroom and watch videos of the lecture, not like now when you can get so many...

Hawkeye, back when I was at PAX (12 years ago) there was a program with the University of Tennessee Knoxville (I think) that was some sort of aviation program. I was enrolled in it and took an airborne radar course. I was a helo guy so it was all new to me, but there were a bunch of jet guys that co...

Speaking of Mark Twain... I just finished reading Huckleberry Finn to my eiiht year old daughter. It was hard to read to her regarding the slavery aspect and the use of the N-word multiple times on almost every page. Actually, reading these words aloud was very difficult. I had to explain to her tha...

KMAC, I didn't mean to imply that it was OK for the old man to make the mistakes that he did, just that he did make mistakes and he probably realized that his time flying solo is up (at least we can hope). Very few go on a flight planning to be dangerous or to cause an accident. There will probably ...

It is true that you do not know the story of the "other guy". A few years ago while flying bounces in the pattern at my airport, I had two close calls from the same airplane. I was fat dumb and happy on downwind (left pattern)with one airplane ahead of me and one behind just finishing his ...

I mentioned AOPA's Safety Pub on "Operating at Nontowered Airports"... I believe that it is worth looking at by anyone who flies. You can get it by the link that I posted above.

Yes George, you are right... the aircraft on final does legally have the right of way. Common sense, courtesy, and popular belief are a bit contrary to the bare minimums that are in the FARs concerning operations at nontowered airports. The fact of the matter is you can (maybe) split S right down to...

Hawkeye, I face a similar situation every time I fly at my home airport (Brenham, TX) on a weekend. We have a restaurant on the field so there is a lot of weekend traffic. It never fails, someone comes in from the southeast (Houston) and either the first time they talk on the radio (if they talk at ...

ICEMAN, I may have the least helpful advice... Somewhere, and I apologize for not being able to find the source, there is a list of maintenance/repair items and the estimated time required to perform these items. Perhaps if someone knows where this can be found then you can compare this to the maint...
