Hello Paul,
I still have a set of nice lady legs for sale. You can view the older ad in the trademart forum.

Re: Avcon 180hp oil temps
DEM: Avcons have a tendency to run cool with respect to oil temperatures. I ran through the same concerns when I first bought my airplane. After testing & replacing the oil temperature sensor/gauge, it still runs cooler than Lycoming would prefer. I think the oil cooler is probably unnecessary 9...

Re: Struts in windshield area?
V-braces are still available as a special order from F. Atlee Dodge. They require a field approval to be installed in a 170. There are other good forum threads on the topic. Personally, I was surprised at how much a V-brace stiffened the fuselage solely from the evidence of eliminating the windshiel...

Re: 1953 Learning to fly
Some of the same footage is in the following youtube clip, "The Flying Businessman." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGEgJ2ZOTRY The clarity is much better. The red and white 170B used is N4627C, clearly readable on the tail. Its nice to see these birds in their prime -- although we all kn...

Re: Battery Location with Avcon 180hp conversion
A lightweight 170 with the Avcon conversion can be particularly nose heavy -- that is, it tends to be at forward CG. This can make 3-point landings more difficult. As George suggested, an aft-battery conversion can be a good idea to help balance this equation. I've been told that the weight of the l...

Re: 180 Gear vs Lady Legs
Please forgive me for steering towards the original question. I recently (within the past 3 years) replaced my "lady leg" gear for 180 gear. The extra ground clearance, strength, and angle of attack outweigh the weight penalty. The Pponk beef-up makes a good deal of sense when putting on l...

Re: flying to AK
I've made that exact journey a couple of times now in my 170, and as recently as last summer for the 170 convention in Kentucky. "Follow the highway" is sage advice. And its really the only viable option from that part of the country. The most difficult part of the entire trip was UNITED S...

Would someone please tell me the purpose of these seals? I can only speculate.

Re: 31" bush tires on cessna 170b
Excellent thinking, John! We actually checked for that -- and you were right, I did need a little adjustment. But even after that, it really does take a lot more oomph (a Minnesota technical measure of force measured in post-movement uffdas) to move the airplane on the large-footprint soft rubber bu...

Re: rubber flooring
Well, I saw the link NOW. Thanks, Bruce! For what its worth, the flooring I described above is called AerMat 9000. I sense my pocketbook is going to be lighter in the future.

Re: rubber flooring
How do I do & document such a test? I like a mat because I can easily and quickly take it out and rinse it off at the end of the day. I took my floor out when doing the float kit; it took quite some time to get back in, so going with a bare floor isn't a good option for me. Not trying to be too ...

Re: float kit install
I had difficulty finding a sheet metal person or an A&P who had done a 170 before ANYWHERE in Alaska. It seems that the 170s that had been converted to floats all had been done long ago, and none in recent memory. In other words, the corporate knowledge had retired. The original quote I was give...

Re: Landing gear adjustment
When measuring/adjusting these angles, a set of grease plates under each main tire is essential.

Can you please detail how it attaches to the rear carry-through spar? Its not apparent from looking at the photo. Thank you!

Re: 31" bush tires on cessna 170b
I'd like to point out the biggest shocker for me going from what I call training wheels -- 8.00s -- to big wheels (29 inch bushwheels). My little 8.00s, by the way, were the biggest tires at the convention this summer in Kentucky (I think I'm the only one who had them). And I only brought them down ...
