Sure, but a productive argument. I believe many decisions in aircraft maintenance are based on assumptions, 2nd-hand information, and carry-over practices, from other industries, that don't necessarily apply. So, why not bring such topics out in the open for clear discussion?

Re: Horton STOL performance
Thanks Jim. Maybe I'll post some performance data on here once I've put some time on her.

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
You are correct David, but finding approval for myself is not the intent of the question. I am challenging the premise for making such an alteration, and would like to hear what people have to say in response.

Alaska WAC charts needed!
I'm re-posting this for increased exposure: I've been acquiring Alaska WAC charts for a little while with the intention of binding them together for a large wall map. Apparently, I missed the notice of discontinuation and I came up 4 charts short for my project. Does anyone have old copies of the fo...

Re: L-19 Leaf spring installation
Okay, I'll jump-start this by adding a bit more. Among other references on the forum to this installation, I've seen Bruce & George debating the reasoning & results of using this spring, and I've seen the modification referred to as a minor alteration. However, this is definitely not a minor...

L-19 Leaf spring installation
So, I've seen reference, on this forum, to the heavy-duty L-19 spring being installed as an upgrade on the 170. My question is, does anyone have approved/accepted data allowing this alteration? I have found no STC for it, and Univair only lists the spring set (P/N L19TWS), as applicable to the L-19....

Re: Horton STOL performance
A follow-up here Jim, the above question is based on the presumption that you've an O-360 installed, as you said your bird has had the Bush conversion. Although I've been calling the STC on my (future) bird a Horton Stol, it is actually the Doyn Bush conversion and the STOL portion of the conversion...

Re: Horton STOL performance
Thanks Jim, that's helpful. I have heard that the cruise speed would be pretty limited by the aerodynamic profile of the plane, so I'm not surprised that you saw no difference. I would expect there to be a small difference though, as more horses allows for greater thrust yanking the high wings/droop...

Re: Wall chart for canada
Thanks for that advice. However, Canada has also discontinued their WAC charts. I've been hunting around though . . .

Wall chart for canada
Does anyone know of the existence of a Canada Wall chart, similar to Sporty's VFR Wall Chart?
I'm looking for a quick reference to use in plotting my coming trip from Colorado to Alaska.
Thanks!

Re: Horton STOL performance
That's a possibility. Although, the pilot was able to float her in between 42 -45mph with no stall horn enunciation. On the other hand, given that the density altitude on that warm, Colorado day was 8500', the likelihood of these performance numbers being accurate is suspect. Can any of you with exp...

Horton STOL performance
Okay, so I've just spent a weekend with my future 170B, and her current owners (of which, I am now partially included). I don't have my tailwheel endorsement yet, so while I flew her back to the airport, one of the owners performed the landing. I was curious about how slow this bird could fly with t...

Re: Engine covers for Doyn STC
Hmm, that's something I failed to consider- so the O-360-A1A is a narrow deck, not the wide deck; is that correct?

Engine covers for Doyn STC
Being in the market for insulated covers, I'm looking for advice on which engine cover to utilize on the B model with a Doyn O-360 conversion. I know the cowling has a pair of blisters to accommodate the wider jugs, but I don't know how far the difference from the stock cowling goes. Can anyone with...
