Re: Continental Mags: Are they junk?
George, When my engine was overhauled, the “new” mags (BL-500516-4) came directly from Continental via Aviall (now known as Boeing). Continental describes them as follows: “Continental® rebuilt magnetos meet new standards, including all current parts and processes. They are tested 100%, with same wa...

Continental Mags: Are they junk?
I have just been advised by mechanic that both of my Continental mags have loose rotors and other parts that are failing and that the cost of overhaul exceeds the price of new mags. These mags have only 470 hours on them since they were overhauled by Continental to new specifications. In talking to ...

Re: Tachometer installation question
Thanks to both of you.
I called the Mitchell factory and they recommend the use of Lucas Red’N Tacky Lithium grease for the cable and remarked that its good for low temps as well.

Tachometer installation question
Asking for a friend..... “My Mitchell tachometer failed and I removed it. The local instrument shop had too many problems with Mitchell so they no longer carry them and supplied me with Superior Labs tach which costs twice as much...” With regard to installation, it looks like all one would have to ...

I was flying my Glasflugal kestrel 17 glider in a group soaring Safari having launched in the morning from Cedarville Calif our second landing sight the first having been Gerlach Nevada on the Black Rock Desert. About 1/2 the group could not find lift and ended up landing back a Cedarville. A By an...

Re: Brake cylinder oil lose.
Maybe you should consider relocating to Anchorage. Good mechanics are scarce! No need to risk skin cancer in your golden years. It’s safer here and there should be lots more new customers for you here!

Give the guys at Atlee Dodge a call. They make strut steps, cowl steps, and a cowl handle so you don’t kill yourself climbing up and down.

I assume that switch is made by Cole Hersee. Is there a Cole Hersee part number on the switch?
There is nothing on the switch nor any reference in the paperwork or box from Cessna/Textron that mentions Cole Hersee. The switch’s case does have 856 stamped on it.

Re: Taxi/landing light switch
I have a new switch which I bought from Cessna a few years ago when my lights stopped working. When I was looking at the switch trying to figure out how in Hell to remove it, I noticed a small brass instrument nut had fallen off something and lodged on the contacts and shorting. I removed the nut an...

Re: Safety Inertia Reel on Seats
I had mine installed several years ago and so far, it has worked flawlessly though I have never yet had my seat roll back unexpectedly for a real test. However, I can remember several Cessna pilots and pax who were killed where the seats did slip or fail on take off. It’s a real problem IMHO and the...

Re: Tow Hook STC SA34CE or SA268CE
The Soaring Society of America owns several of the STCs for tow hook installation on Cessnas now. Contact Denise Layton at the SSA’s office 575-392-1177 to inquire if they own these these two particular STC’s. If you get stuck, there may be a way to get an Field Approval. Yes I know its difficult bu...

Re: Author with Another Question
John, That outboard is a British Seagull. It stems from a pre WWII design that didn’t really change much over the years. Mine was made in 1977. This one is very similar to mine except that I use mine and it shows. It’s got an exposed flywheel on the top with a rope starter. 7B36581D-4EC0-4474-87B9-1...

Re: Author with Another Question
George is correct but no bush plane is going to have such a nice back seat, they are too heavy and restrict you from carrying the sort of cargo carried in the Bush. This shows a Cessna 180 but many 170s will look nearly identical. The original Cessna bench seat has been removed and two lighter, fold...

Re: Required instruments under CAR3 for 55 170B
I am strictly a VFR guy but for much of last summer, severe forest fires gave us smoke filled skies and limited vis in many areas. Flying along Cook Inlet with its gray glacier water merging with gray skies and smoke is not very appealing and can turn serious very quickly. When my AH failed (DG had ...
