Re: Fuel Gauge Lock Washer

Well, it turns out that MS35337-44 split washers, at least the current ones, also don’t work. The heads of the screws are 3/8” dia and the recesses for them in the Scott gauge are slightly more than 3/8”. But the MS split washers, and star washers (both external and internal tooth), have an OD of 5/...

Re: Fuel Gauge Lock Washer

Gary,
I didn’t think to cross reference the L-19 catalog. Great idea. Somehow I knew you would come up with an answer. A split washer it is.

Fuel Gauge Lock Washer

I’m replacing the failing cork floats on my fuel gauge and I just discovered that the lock washers under each of the four screws that mount the gauge are a special size. The C-170B parts catalog identifies them as 1114-5 “Washer - Shakeproof (attach fuel gage)”. (It’s under item 37 of Fig 7.) Mine t...

Re: TakeOff Performance Evaluation and addt’l considerations

It can be surprising how much runway conditions affect takeoff performance. As an example, I have a turf runway at my airport (2400' x 87', 330' elev.) that I keep well mowed. From observation I'm guessing that when the grass is wet, it increases the takeoff roll by about 20-25%. I doubt that most p...

Re: Exhaust Gaskets

Anyone have any experience with these exhaust gaskets supplied bt Fresno Airparts: https://www.fresnoairpartsco.com/product/21493-gasket-exhaust/ They are not the usual spiral wound or paired stainless steel types. They are an asbestos layer sandwiched between two layers of copper sheet, and are a l...

Re: Weighing the Aircraft

Hmm…. Gary and Cessnut, I see your point. I was confusing residual fuel with unusable fuel. AC 43.13-1B, at 10-15.f in the Weighing Procedures chapter says: “f. Drain the fuel system until the quantity indicator reads zero or until the tanks are empty with the aircraft in level flight attitude, unle...

Re: Weighing the Aircraft

At least for draining the fuel, that Cessna procedure does not make sense to me for the 170 models or any other tailwheel aircraft. For tailwheel aircraft, the plane needs to be in level flying position when draining usable fuel. I support the tail up in level flying position as specified by the man...

Re: Shortage of Aviation Mechanics

I’m seeing the same thing here in eastern upstate NY. Three AP/IA’s who worked on the local small GA aircraft retired in the last 5 years and no one has stepped in to replace them. We also lost an avionics shop. The remaining avionics shop in Middlebury VT is doing well though. They have tons of bus...

Re: Stall Horn Light, C170b

My lens, which I believe is original to my plane, is frosted. When I bought my plane the bulb was burnt out, and I replaced it with an LED equivalent to the GE 1816 but with greater lumens. I still can’t see it in daylight. It’s not something I look at anyway.

Re: Ammeter

That is a Stewart Warner ammeter. If you need a new replacement, you can get it online at Summit Racing or Speedway Motors for about $30-35, either the 30-0-30 or the 60-0-60 version.

Have you tried the US Postal Service? A few years ago, I needed to ship an Aeronca Chief door to a foreign country and to my surprise the USPS turned out to be the best and cheapest method.

Re: 0300A - inspecting lifters?

I was told never to do this if you still have the old pull type starter as it negatively affects the clutch mechanism My 170B has the original pull starter and I've been running it with Aeroshell 15W-50, which has the same additives as Aeroshell Plus, since I bought it almost 10 years ago, without ...

Geeze, George, you are right. So does mine. Brain freeze on my part. I quickly jotted what I wrote down without stoping to think about it for a second. Sorry for the misinformation Seventy. George is right. Push in to adjust, pull out to return to DG mode.
