Re: recommended tools? filter cutter / heat gun

I'm a tool snob too. I proudly admit it. Standing on your head with your arm bent backwards in some blind hole is not the time to be screwing around with a ratchet that is sloppy. I've never regretted buying the expensive tool. Have regretted lots of cheap ones. That being said I bought a Wagner hea...

Re: A new contender for the 172/170

Bruce, I am a marketing guy (well, actually I do sales, but we work hand in hand), and I have to agree with you. By and large GA marketing stinks! However, some have managed to break through. Cirrus was/is brilliant. When Alan Klapmeier used to do demo flights, he wouldn't take the customer up and s...

Re: A new contender for the 172/170

Not sure, but I do wonder, are our companies missing something? The production of airplanes that a person could own has slowed to a crawl here. . I here a lot of comments like this, and they make me wonder. It's not like a new 172 only costs $50k to make, and the rest is pure profit for Textron. Or...

Re: Work in Unheated Uninsulated Hanger

I did an entire avionics swap in an unheated hanger a couple years ago. I took all the seats out, threw in a small space heater and a work light, closed the cabin doors, and ensconced myself in there for a couple weekends. It heated up quite nicely, despite the single digit temps outside. I had done...

Re: Door latch repair

It doesn't fall out. Usually it requires some pulling/wiggling. I've never had to pry on it, or really crank on it, but like I said, this is not a precision smooth slide fit. These things are a real PIA. When you get it out, I would recommend spending some quality really going through the latch and ...

If you look up the respective parts manuals you can check and see if they use the same p/n's.

Re: Sudden roughness during cruise

You could check for intake leaks (make sure all the hardware is tight). If it seems confined to a mag then run the engine a few minutes on that mag and see which exhaust stack is cooler. Those fancy temp guns work great for this, otherwise sometimes you can just touch it with a crayon and if it does...

Re: Max weight of a passanger

My father in law is a big, big dude, and not very mobile. I took him once, and it was a bit iffy. Getting in and out he really stressed the step, and I thought he was going to break the seat back. Once in and situated it was fine and he had a wonderful time. I'm glad I did it. He's done so much for ...

Re: Odyssey Battery Life

Richard, you have most likely given the information previously, but please advise what STC is required to use the Odyssey battery (in a 172 if you know), what the stc costs and which Odyssey battery you recommend. Thanks! Atlee Dodge has the STC for the 170 and 180, and it requires use of their bat...

Re: Odyssey Battery Life

All, Thanks for the tips. To answers some questions: Alternator. It never shows a discharge under normal use and load so I'm assuming it's putting out enough power. B&C starter overhauled 250 hours ago. Voltage has been rock steady at 14v. I check the wires I can reach through the inspection doo...

Odyssey Battery Life

Hi All, About 3.5 years ago I installed an Odyssey SBS J-16 battery (TSO'd version of the PC680) in my 170. It's never been an animal in winter, but gets the job done. After starting, even if I've had to crank a bit, the ammeter never seems to show it taking much of a charge...a few amps at best. Li...

Re: Door locks?

I used to be in the lock and key business and I've seen that style before. I would bet they are still around. Try another locksmith, or a good hardware store. (Hint from a former hardware store owner: Go in and find the person holding a broom. That's the owner. He/she will go to the ends of the eart...

This one has worked well for me on two RV's, a Challenger and a 170. https://www.amazon.com/ProsKit-300-015-Crimper-Closed-Contacts/dp/B003WRJATU http://www.steinair.com/product/4-way-indent-crimper/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt52JeRPo7k I've been using one of these on my 170 and my Dad's RV8...

Re: What documents Required in Airplane?

And while a current sectional of the area you are flying in is not specifically required for part 91 flight, having one goes a long way to showing you know all pertinent information for the flight you took or where about to take. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the way the rule actually reads ...

Re: ADS B

Just read a post that currently 30,000 A/C in compliance w ADS B. A little dismay was expressed. Pilots are waiting. I'm not surprised. 1. The price keeps coming down. 2. You only need it if you fly in Class C or higher. You can do a whole lotta flying, to a whole lotta airports, without touching C...
