Re: Crosswind Component Chart
That wasp reminds me of this: One time, not long after getting the 170, I had the misfortune of using the "high-speed taxiway" after a poorly executed carrier landing. It was a non-event, but it was better than a groundloop. Anyway, my dad and I joked that if we were ever to groundloop the...

Re: Crosswind Component Chart
I'm still amazed that you say you can land in a 20kt direct crosswind in the 170! All I have to contribute is a minor terminology correction...facepalm.

Re: Crosswind Component Chart
I do not mean to remove the "crab" just before touchdown. I do not favor a "crab" to deal with a crosswind. I favor a forward slip. What I mean is that while on final I apply rudder to keep the airplane aligned with the runway centerline, coupled with sufficient aileron to preve...

Re: 1 takeoff and 2 landings (video) and some landing discussion
And I got caught red-handed with a 'not quite a perfect' landing. Hey! You kept it straight, which is the important thing. Nice throttle work on the save. I had one just like that the other day in a ~11kt wind that seemed to last forever, there was a lot of throttle jockeying going on and I should ...

1 takeoff and 2 landings (video) and some landing discussion
Disclaimer: This video is not exciting in any sense of the word. I figured some of you might just enjoy watching a 170 if you have nothing better to do. http://www.vimeo.com/4931556 I've been having a tough time with my landings lately so I asked my dad to film a few (calm winds.) I've been trying t...

Re: Cessna 170 Resale values
As someone who bought a 170B at what I now estimate to be the peak high valuation period for the type, it's sort of a sick feeling to see the prices they are now going for.
Oh well. If I'm stuck with it, so be it. I love the old bird and I have fun flying it. Things could be worse.

Re: Better to be good or lucky?
Hey, we finally agree! I kinda feel bad for that kid, as this incident has transcended normal aviation circles. I've been getting this email forward from a lot of non-pilots. Bad way to get famous.gahorn wrote:I always thought snowboarding was ill-conceived compared to alpine skiing.

Re: Sparky Imeson killed in plane crash
Would be interesting to know if a 406 ELT could have saved him as the article indicates a 36 hr search. A friend of mine set off a 406 ELT in a Falcon they were working on and in less than a minute they recieved a call fom the feds checking to make sure that it was just a test. Bill K. It's my unde...

Re: Oregon Coast Trip
The Oregon coast probably has its best days in September. All of late summer can sport some fine high pressure clear days, but it seems these last couple years we've had an indian summer that really makes Sept wonderful.

Re: 1953 Flight Training video
That video is pure gold. Here's a pic of my grandfather with his 140, but there's also one hanging on the wall of my uncle's house of gramps in front of his Comanche in full business suit attire. Sometimes I'm tempted to dress up and execute a reenactment. http://www.backcountrypilot.org/gallery/alb...

Nice work, Doug. I think my favorite of the bunch is February (against the snowmelt on/mountain.) Very cool, whose shot is that?

Re: RUDDER STEERING SPRINGS
Just to expound on the cons of using compression springs... I am an avid Telemark snow skier, which is characterized by a special free-heel binding that anchors only the front of the boot. A special skiing technique is used that requires that the heel of the uphill foot is lifted off the ski in turn...
