Re: Oil Sump Corrosion
This topic had a fair amount of input 3-4 years ago. I can not search and find the topic though. I had this problem and found the sump is made of magnesium. There are two model sumps, a five bolt hole and a three bolt hole. As a price point there had been one of each, used, on eBay a year or so ago ...

Re: Recommendations for overhaul shops?
Another engine shop in Massachusetts is Unlimited Aero Engines at Fitchburg airport (KFIT). Tim Hess has been working on aircraft engines for a number of the shops in New England and helped me with a O300B cylinder replacement and oil sump repair. He also has been the engine shop for a couple of the...

Re: Recommendations for overhaul shops?
I think Mattituck has stopped doing C145/O300 overhauls for at least five years now. Also I have read where "Teledyne Technologies is closing its airplane engine overhaul facility at Mattituck Airbase on June 15, a decision that will put about 20 people out of work." Not sure if it is June...

Re: 0-300B STC available?
The association does have a O-300B STC and it is $75 for members. My 52B had a 0300B installed in 1959 that came out of an early 172. The logbook says 0300B was installed in 59 and when the association got the STC sometime in the last two years I sent for and got one. A log entry by my AI that he fo...

Re: oldest 170 pilot ?
As a matter of fact, I was a senior Captain when Pontius hired in as an "oiler" (Flight Engineer} trying o work his way up to a junior copilot job. However, in view of my recently cessation of aviating, I can no longer claim being the most ancient aviator in the C-170 (or anything else fo...

Re: 1956 172 panel overlay..
FYI - during the Benton Harbor flyin (fun time) I wound up in Dawagiac (C91) MI a couple of times. There was a former car dealer based there that has an early 172 that has won the best original plane at Oshkosh in the past. When you look it is in the the row of past winners. If you are interested in...

LeeBottom damaged by tornado
This is information I just saw on the National Aeronca Association website. From a member, Nathan Hammond, on the website: Reports are coming in slow; but LeeBottom took one on the chin. Took the roof off the house, hangar, and shop. Ginger and the animals are all okay, Rich is on his way home from ...

I think mine is origional and it is a red outline square with the following inside it. Should have taken a picture today but did not so: __________________ | Remove at | | Temperatures | | Above 60 o F. | |________________ | The little o for degrees is in the middle of the zero in 60 not at the top ...

Re: Flying
Miles, KG, and Cessna_pilot, I would love to give your father a ride in a 52B that I was in the process of selling when it developed a small leak in the oil sump. I have taken the plane to Fitchburg KFIT to Unlimited Aero Engines. They are the people who did most of the work on the Red Bull Racing e...

Re: medical question
Per Bruce: Some reasonableness was brought to many who don't fly for hire with the Sport Pilot option. Is it reasonable to be able to fly a plane if you can drive a car putting many more people in danger. I thing so. Seems reasonable on the surface but as we look at it we realize that there aren't m...

Re: medical question
This AME is one of the easier ones in the area but goes by the book as far as paperwork is concerned. I think he has such a good business going he is afraid to take a chance and make a decision on his own without getting the stamp of approval from the regional surgeon. You are correct that you can n...

Re: medical question
I have become totally sick of the FAA medical process. At 68 I try to keep my health in as good a condition as possible. That means getting a cataract taken care of which improved my vision tremendously, basal cell skin cancer removed, colonoscopy as directed by my doctor, blood pressure pill though...
