In my experience with them, the VG's aren't about slower speeds but better handling at such slow speeds. The aileron control in slow flight is night and day. But yes - it's not high on the priority list, certainly not above the engine monitor I want to add.

Interesting, I'll have that looked at. It's interesting to me that it only occurs periodically after a flight and shutdown, and no other times.

Does anyone have an audio file / video of an engine starting up/running with this exhaust installed?

In addition to the above, I actually slide my finger along the pushrod feeling for any irregularity. One of my CFIs at the flight school I used to go to told me this as she found a pretty significant crack in the pushrod of a 10 year old 172S this way.
