Re: Lycoming conversion cowl mod

I have just finished using "Harrys" STC and kit. It is good value for money and everything is there. He provides a new nose bowl and the 2 required "bumps'. He provides a new engine mounts, engine frame ,oil cooler ,the list goes on. I did a lot of research on the different stc's aroun...

Re: peformance with the 180hp

Superior engines are sold as a kit that is in a box with all parts that are PMA. They all have 8130 paper work. Plus superior has their own engine with a FAA type certificate. Was being fitted American Champion Citraba. So what a number of people are doing is using a data plate off a lycoming and do...

Re: peformance with the 180hp

First off a big thankyou to Gahorn for a question that high lighted data regarding the static RPM of our new propellor. There has been a typo error with our Engineering Order for the requirements of a Sensenich 76EM8S5-0-60. A lycoming clone is often a Superior engine built in Texas. The Superior pr...

Re: peformance with the 180hp

OZ is Australia. We are of only 22 million people. 82% of our aircraft are built in the USA. I think we have only 15 cessna 170's in the country. So the market for the sale of spares of 170's is very restricted.

peformance with the 180hp

I have just fitted a lycoming clone to my 170a. So for a 180hp what do we really get. I am hoping for a least 105kts cruize, but I have fitted 60in pitch sensenich prop so the figures will be unknown. I used Harrys STC and found it brillant so easy and good value. There wasnt any choice of overhaul o...

Re: Headliner Bows ?

I have found that the fiberglass tent poles for the dome tents that the sell in outdoor stores work real well. Just cut to size and make small brackets to fit the thicker rods.

Re: cleveland brakes 170B

I had the same problem, but however I have dual piston brake calipers [cleveland] and could not source new here in Oz. So after a chat with the Feds , we raised a engineering order to press a stainless steel sleeve in the bore. The caliper was machined out to accept the sleeve. We still use the orgin...

Re: Parking Brake

The "L/H bubble"??? The bubble which applies to SN19200 and on? (despite the fact your serial is 19006?) With the brake pedals depressed, the cable lifts the lever which locks the master operating rod in the down/applied position. If so, that is the type which is troublesome. Thankyou for...

Re: Parking Brake

Russ Farris ,I totally support your ideas as we can all change hats if we are all so inclined. Most car mechanics have drivers license dont they? Being able to appreciate all facets of aviation makes it a more exciting job, hobby, interest etc. Now back to brakes.I wasnt aware of the hand brake issue ...

Re: Beware of Public Impressions

The local council in our city has by-laws restricting commerical vehicles and comerical activities in domestic housing areas. It stops people parking semi-trailors trucks being parked out-side domestic housing and blocking up the streets, or businesses being run from home. They will allow a small of...

Re: Beware of Public Impressions

You blokes are so right about being wary of public impressions. We had just done a recovery on a downed 170 and it was pass mid-night after it was completed so instead of heading back to the hangers I decided to leave the trailor and aircraft parked on my front lawn. Next morning about 7.30 a fire t...

Re: Prop Question

It seems one of our colleagues is a traditionalist, which is great as we must preserve the heritage of the Cessna 170 for the future. I really respect him for this . But I also get worried about power lines and trees at the end of the runway and thus I have a need to modify to suit my needs of opera...

Re: Prop Question

It was after I had pushed the send key I realised I was opening a Pandora's Box regarding the extra power out of a O-300. I am a Aircraft Engineer by profession and have been doing this sort of thing [passion] all my life. We found this 170A in bits in a hanger and we decided to rebuild it. It had a...

Re: Prop Question

PROP WASH I had the same problem as you, after extracting a little more power from the O-300 and wanting to put it to good use. The 53 inch prop was repitched another inch and it completed the job as expected. I was also given a seaplane prop and tried that one also. What a rocket ship ,climb but sh...

Re: Alternator conversion for lycoming

You can never have too much power, so however we have fitted a plane power alternator and a plane power voltage regulator [these are cheap] to a aircraft and we are very impressed with the preformance [rock steady voltage output]. We had the Kelly alternator problems not once but 3 times all changed...
