Re: Exhaust system repair - need suggestions
Question about converting from pancakes to Hanlon-Wilson. I'm biting the bullet and doing the conversion while installing an overhauled engine. I'm clear on most of it (two left-hand mufflers and shrouds) but for the tailpipes, do I need two lefts or one each right and left? And AWI lists two types ...

Re: Possible '48 fuel check valve supply
Update on this. I got my eBay valves in the mail. My mechanic and I cracked one open and the guts are essentially the same as the valve seen here. We removed the spring and he is happy to install it in the airplane. A good outcome and $480 saved.

Re: My rudder has a lot more travel to the left
The first thing I would do is measure the rudder travel. It should be 16 degrees left and right. If you can't adjust the stops to get that, it's time to start checking the vertical stab and rudder assemblies for straight/square and damage.

Re: Possible '48 fuel check valve supply
I assure you I have no intention of installing one of these valves on my airplane without getting my IA involved. I'm just taking a chance on buying them because for $15, why not? Maybe they'll work, maybe I'll throw them in the garbage. I just thought others 48 owners might be interested and figure...

Possible '48 fuel check valve supply
I'm in the process installing the missing fuel pump in my ragwing. While searching for a reasonably priced check valve I spotted these items on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165189689308 They have a very similar part number to the Parker 475-GG-1/4D, and look very similar based on the photos. Hoof,...

Re: 1948 170
The '48 has one 12.5 gallon tank in the left wing and two 12.5 gallon tanks in the right wing. The story I've heard is that Cessna was reusing tanks from the 140. It was not uncommon to see an additional 12.5 gallon tank added to the left wing. It just mirrors the right wing installation. You do wan...

Re: 1948 170
As a fellow metallized ragwing owner, welcome! In my opinion (which isn't worth a whole lot), the best "STOL kit" for the '48 is a climb prop and weight reduction. As George said, good technique and lots of practice will get you easily landing shorter than you can take off again.

Re: AV-30-C
Mine is sometimes 10 degrees, often 20, occasionally 45 or more. I just wired a little GPS puck up to the serial in, ground track is what I really use anyway.mmcmillan2 wrote:How many degrees off is it after 20 min?

Re: Insurance
The commercial requires 10 hours of complex or "technically advanced airplane". Been that way for 5 years or so. The flight schools pushed it through because they wanted to be done with retracts. So now you can go zero->CFI in the same G1000 172.

Re: AV-30-C
I've had a single AV-30 in my 170 for about a year. In general I am happy with it for my purposes. I fly a fair bit of XC and night, which carry a somewhat increased risk of inadvertent IMC compared to local and daytime flights. For that reason I want a useable attitude indication for emergency situ...

Re: Extreme Heat In Center Tunnel
Hot air flowing when the valve is "closed" is a big freakin' deal. If you develop an exhaust leak you will be unable to stop carbon monoxide getting into the cabin. It needs to be fixed. Once it's fixed, you will probably still notice that the trim wheel gets warm when the heat is on. The ...

Re: Help Identify this Electrical Component
Looks like a Klixon CA-2 self-resetting breaker (the -2 is the amperage, that part may be different). You don't say what model you have, but in my '48 the IPC shows the breaker on the turn & bank. On the later models I believe it also protects the stall horn. Everything else on the the '48 uses ...

For some reason I thought this was going to be about the book "New York To Buenos Aires in 16 Days", which is a true story involving a 170. But I can't remember if they went through Brazil on their way to Argentina.

Re: Uavionics TailbeaconX
The skyBeacon and original tailBeacon both support "anonymous mode", which will return a random hex code and "VFR" callsign if you are squawking 1200. You can enable it with the configuration app. Some other 986 MHz/UAT ADSB transponders also have similar features. Unfortunately ...
