Re: Installed 180 Landing Gear
Arash. Shims are placed under the landing gear leg to raise the gap between the gear leg and the fuselage. By doing that it lowers raises the wing on that side. you only do this if the wing tip to ground distance is more then 3 inches different from each other. If you look at the 170 IPC on the land...

Re: Installed 180 Landing Gear
Ok. now that we all agree on what I am doing. I am trying to shim the axles on the gear for toe in and camber. I bought $1K worth of shims. It turns out I could have made my own but I wanted to see the actual thickness of the shims in the 100 series service manual. As it turns out the shims that wer...

Re: Sage Advise Wanted Clean Plexiglas windscreen
Wash with copious amounts of water and a terry cloth towel. DO not use paper towels ever. Rinse windscreen first to get any dust off before using the towel. When cleaning windscreens only clean with an up and down straight motion from the cowl to the wing. do not clean in circles. Plexiglass cleaner...

Re: Hello! New member in Georgia.
Welcome Elijah, Welcome to the Forums. I love hearing these stories about reclaiming old family assets. Good on you for doing it. You will find a wealth of information here. Just remeber to search a topic because it has probably been covered already, but by all means ask if you cant find it. Even th...

Re: Installed 180 Landing Gear
Please be aware the gearbox to fuselage shims do have a effect on gear alignment also. If you have a excessive axle to gear leg shims then look at the gearbox to fuselage shims also. These are sometimes called wedges.not much in the manuals about this . Ghostflyer, Are you referencing the washers t...

Re: Installed 180 Landing Gear
Another point to remember is the added weight on the tailwheel. It is not inconsequential. If you have a tail pull handle installed, you'll notice it. The added weight also might make bringing the tail up a bit longer. The stiffer gear has me running just a bit lower tire pressures. Tailwheel geome...

Re: Installed 180 Landing Gear
Installed 180 gear on 13D. I tried to use the shims that I had on there but I noticed that using them didn't even come close to shimming it to the book. Anybody have any shims laying around collecting dust? Doug

Re: Propeller/Annual Inspection
DUring an annual, safety wire is removed and bolts are retorqued. The reason for it is possible bolt stretching. So the answer is only a thorough IA will do that. You will not get that done with a $300 annual. Doug, do you have a wooden prop? Yes, on my RV-6. But bolt retorquing is a standard pract...

Re: Found Water in Brake Wheel Cylinder
I guess I've confused the issue, if you have air in the system then bleeding from the bottom to the top is the trick, but periodic bleeding to replace the fluid in the calliper should be from the top to the bottom. +1 I have done that. That is why I was surprised to see that i had a clear liquid in...

Re: Found Water in Brake Wheel Cylinder
Coincidentally, replacing my 170 gear for 180 gear I found the same problem. I am a little confused since I have never found fluid exchange. The puck had a high amount of clear fluid in the caliper even after I have bleed the brakes from the bottom up and have never found the puck to leak. I just de...

Re: Landing Gear Alignment
When I bought my 170, it had wheel alignment issues. When we put it on grease plates and checked the alignment, we found that the alignment would be corrected by taking the shim on the right side out, and installing it with the correct orientation. I suppose someone took the axle off, and got the s...

Re: Landing Gear Alignment
Hi. Purchased a 1953 170 and my right tire leans out (top) more than the other. Quite noticeably. Tracks alright but looks very strange. There are shims but are equal on both sides? Could my gear be bent? Just joined this forum so hope I have the proper area for asking this question. Thanks Hi Rich...
