Re: old heading indicator (jammed resetting screw)
Seventy, from the photo at the link you posted, I'm assuming that you are referring to the adjustment knob below the window that you use to set the DG. When I bought my 170 years ago, I had the same problem. I couldn't set the DG because the knob wouldn't turn. When I was at Keystone Instruments in ...

Re: First annual (for me and this plane)
Thanks George, feel free to circulate it. Miles, no it has not been published in the 170 News. I prepared it for myself and this is the first time I've sent it to anyone. I've found that It's a good reference to review every so often, especially around annual time. When I saw redacted's post, it occ...

Re: First annual (for me and this plane)
Attached is a summary that I've put together over the years since I first bought my 170B. It's compiled from the posts on this forum. You might not need to worry about some of them since your plane was recently rebuilt. Also, It's for a C-170 model with a stock engine. But you'll get an idea of the ...

Re: 170B Flap Handle Markings
I agree that the position of the decal(s) likely changed for the various year models. Here a photo of the flap handle on my '52 B model, which from what I can tell has the original decals (as well as paint).

Mike, I also own a '52 170B. The owner's manual for the '52 B model can be found (and downloaded by members for free) in this thread in the MX Library: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=9026

Re: Delco Starter Parts
Dustin, except for the mounting flange, that starter is essentially the same as used on many vintage tractors. The easiest way to get the switch is at your local NAPA. It's NAPA p/n ST11. You can also get it from vintage tractor parts sources, such as Steiner, but under a different part number. The ...

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)
I just received my April 2022 copy of Cessna Flyer and coincidentally it has an excellent article by Bill Ross of Superior on compression testing.
It also has a pretty good looking C-170B on the cover. Congratulations Miles!

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)
I've been doing 3-4 compression checks a week, for the last 3 years, 98% on TCM products. 42lb is the most common number. I might recall seeing 41lb once and I think I recall 44lb but day in and day out it's likely 42lb That's been my experience as well. The master orifice reading usually has been ...

Re: Cylinder for C-145 (O-300)
I fully agree with Bruce. Read TCM M-0, pp. 6-104 to 6-115. The thinking on compression tests has changed in the last couple of decades. Now, it's not considered as reliable an indicator of cylinder condition as in the past. Plus, now you are supposed to compare the compression readings to the readi...

Re: Jury Strut Chaffing Prevention
I have a number of cubs based at my airport. They use one of the following under the jury strut clamps on their planes: electrical tape, silicone tape (e.g., rescue tape), or stick-on film obtained from a sign shop. From what I can tell, they all seem to work pretty well. The stick-on film is thinne...

Re: Tailwheel spring corrosion
The leaf spring “Shackle” (170B p/n 0542108) has the tit and is the same part as L-19 p/n 0642108. You can get it from Air Repair using either the 170B or L-19 part number. That's the only source I know of, other than an eBay find (like the one above). I spray a light coat of LPS-3 on my tail spring...

Re: Battery Options/Opinions
My 170B had a Concorde RG-25XC in it when I bought it. It lasted 8 years. I replaced it with another RG-25XC a few years ago and it's going strong. I plan on sticking with the RG-25XC.

Re: Streaks behind fuel vent.
Thanks Rich. I’ll get some with the next Spruce order I place and let everyone know how it works on auto gas. If I don’t have luck, I’ll find plenty of other uses for it

Re: Streaks behind fuel vent.
Rich, were you removing avgas stains? Do you know if Carbon X also works on auto gas stains? I have another aircraft (not my 170B) that has auto gas stains that I've tried to remove with many things without any luck.
