Re: Brakes,I need a break
On the other side of the world, I was struggling with a similar situation on Saturday. I too took a break! This may be well known, but it was new knowledge to me and might help someone. I had read about pressure filling the system from the bottom, but it was not working for me. I could pump in a sma...

N4180V flies again after 5 years
Hi All, Thanks to many of you who have answered questions and sent measurements, pictures and advice throughout the past couple of years while I worked on this project. I bought N4180V in pieces along with an engine from an early C172 in 2019 and on 18th July 2019 the container arrived in Dublin. On...

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
Thanks Ghost, I rebuilt the rudder, made new sides for the top section which contains the mass and squared it off. I found apprentice marks all up in there, it had been previously rebuilt badly. It is reinstalled, moves freely without any binding. The cables are evenly stressed and the pedals are ev...

Re: Take-Off Briefings
Hi All, I've attached my checklist for EI-AEN. The briefing section is along the lines of George's post. I do it out loud if another pilot onboard or to myself if just me or pax onboard. I have had CFIs explain why "there's no need" for it in light non-commercial GA aircraft and others tel...

Replacement cable length/tension problem
Gents, I have completely replaced the cables and pulleys using (the correct) McFarlane kits. I have the aileron direct cable turnbuckles cranked to the max and have just barely enough tension. If (When) they stretch they will fall below aceptable tension. I removed the new cable and compared it to t...

Re: Step forward for EI-AEN
I really didn't see the truck before-hand. In fact I was so busy stressing out about the potential for wing damage, that I didn't really notice until someone pointed out the perfect match afterwards!
I'm hoping this is the last time she is ever on the back of a truck!
Gareth.

Step forward for EI-AEN
Morning all, Quick update. EI-AEN, formerly N4180V, went on a road-trip yesterday. It was a bit stressful! She is now hangared at an airfield rather than in my workshop. She has her radio station license and once the rest of the vinyl goes on, her registration will be completed. There is a bit more ...

Re: Engine mount to firewall bolts
Thanks Jim,
That certainly explains the apparently-too-long bolts in the IPC! I've moved on to learning all the places the baffle parts are attached, replacing baffle seals and drilling the carb for a temperature probe. Planning on inspection and flying in early May.
Cheers,
Gareth.

Re: Engine mount to firewall bolts
Thanks for the feedback. I wanted to make sure that nothing important and non-obvious was missing and I'm happy that it isn't. Agreed on the rolled vs cut threads - not an option to extend the threads. Good catch on the back-to-front bolts issue. I installed them reversed so I could measure in comfo...

Re: Engine mount to firewall bolts
Gareth, Looking at the “A” parts book, the A uses the same bolt length for the mount but after s/n 19200 uses a rubber bushing arrangement and a large square washer to sandwich the rubber against the mount. The rubber isolator installation means there’s a larger diameter hole through the firewall a...

Engine mount to firewall bolts
Hi all, I have reached the point of reattaching the engine to EI-AEN ('48 ragwing) and I'm confused (again). Based on the 48 and 170A IPCs the required bolts are: Bolts - (Attach Engine Mount - Upper Firewall) are AN6-22A with 2 washers - 1 of AN970-6 (big wide one) and 1 of AN960-616 ("regular...

Re: Aileron bellcrank bolts
Never would have guessed!
The bushings appear to be part of the bell crank/airframe rather than the rigging, but the nuts and bolts are part of the rigging.

Re: Aileron bellcrank bolts
Thanks Kevin,
It would be nice if they had included such inconsequential details in the IPC!

Aileron bellcrank bolts
Gentlemen, I'm finishing up replacing all the control cables, pulleys, turnbuckles, etc. and I'm a bit confused at the aileron bellcranks The '48 IPC shows AN3 bolts but the fittings are all drilled 1/4 inch (AN4 holes). There is no mention in the IPC of bushings, but I have found bushings on most (...

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
As suggested I mounted the rudder to the bench. The fin is square (Red line in the photo). The rudder tip is not square to the leading edge rib properly the Support - Bellcrank Assembly - Rudder IPC 1948: 13-26( :D Hi George!) Examining the rudder tip it appears that some or all of the rudder has be...
