Re: Flight Instruction in Alaska

I believe Mr. Horn offers sage advice; to which I might add: If you have the time, interview the potential instructors to obtain their points of view. Select the one that best fits your needs, all other things being equal (costs, logistics, etc.). The interviews don't have to be formal. I've intervi...

Re: Oil filter

I think the idea of running clean oil thru a dirty filter makes no sense at all
I would tend to agree. In my cargo truck, I change only the oil filters (there's 2) and have them analyzed for the usual contaminants. If none, top off the 22 qt crankcase and drive on...

Re: Time for Paint!

Maybe one could get paint scheme ideas from the 170 calendars, past and present. Hagerstown Aircraft Services (Hagerstown, MD) have been painting/repairing aircraft for a very long time; over 60 years. Tracey Potter is the new owner/boss of the outfit. He's been there over 30 years, I believe. It wa...

Re: Convention Attendance

On your return, land at the Gettysburg airport If anyone is planning on putting George's suggestion into action, they may contact an Association member (me) for anything they might need. My 170 is based at W05; I have a gas card and can get you fuel (It's $5.50/gal currently). I might also be avail...

I can't eat horns, don't care about 'em. Although, I have some I could show ya
In all the years I've spent pursuing deer, I've never seen one with horns. I've seen plenty with antlers, however.

Re: My Guardian Angel..

This could probably be posted in "Dog Lovers", but chose to tell the story here for what will be obvious reasons, in my opinion. Some 30 years ago, during my college days, there were many road trips. I usually had at least one 2-legged passenger with me, but I always had one four legged Go...

Re: Total Re-Wire

Thanks. I've acquired much wire, connectors, resistors, capacitors, etc., from a company that moved its R&D and production shop. I'll have to research the brand and p/n for all of it to see if it can be used in aircraft. A lot of "different" looking stuff that isn't found in auto store...

Re: Lubing Control Yoke Tubes

I've found using paste wax works well. It's dry, does not collect dust, etc., is simple and easy to apply/reapply, and lasts quite awhile.

Re: Total Re-Wire

Is there any type of wire insulation that would be unapproved for use in aircraft? Maybe the more direct question is, What type of wire is approved?

Re: Mud Daubers....

a mud dauber building a nest in the fuel vent On at least one 170's fuel vent, I've seen a rubber-ish cap with a hole in it. In the fuel vent, behind the cap was, for lack of the proper term, a small, white marble. Farther back the vent was a cotter pin through the vent. When tied down, the ball wa...

Re: Mud Daubers....

Mud Daubers are in the same family as wasps; Sphecidae. Not sure which mud dauber is indigenous to TX, but here in the Mid-Atlantic, we have the genus Trypoxylon, or "Organ Pipe" mud daubers. Can find the galleries (nests) just about anywhere, in anything tubular or on the underside of bar...

This question is for information purposes and another possible place to search: Is the Cessna 195 elevator the same as the 170B?

Re: strut step

I do not recall from where I gleaned the following opinion; possibly from this forum. It was said that the strut strap-on contrivance commonly referred to as a "step" should be used as a foot "rest" upon which to lean rather than upon which to place one's entire body weight. It w...

Re: Sunday Afternoon with Your Favorite Gal

All we have is Canada Geese around here. I'd like to add to rupertjl's conclusion of the existence of snows (snow geese, Chen caerulescens ) in the Mid Atlantic. Around Gettysburg, PA, their mornful whistling can be heard. One should then look WAY up to find large flights. I haven't noticed any for...

Re: Rubber Gaskets under gear leg covers

While I cannot certify that may gaskets are official aircraft parts, they are rectangular and are split aft. At the split, the ends overlap to assure a reasonable seal.
