Re: Apple IPad Mini review
we started using iPads with internal GPS this past summer for our work airplanes, flying on thunderstorms. In ND we have a purpose-built app that takes the GPS data and input from the crew and displays position on a moving map with the target area boundaries, plus logs all events needed during the f...

Re: Seat and locking part dimension questions.
the installation instructions for the secondary seat stop reels (SK210-175) specify that they lock when the pin is 0.05" above the rail, and unlock at 0.10" above the rail. You just adjust the cable to set the release point, took a couple tries initially. I recheck them at the annuals.

Re: 170 a spar doubler corrosion
clean out the screw head so the driver bit fits tightly and full depth. use a good quality bit, either the Snap-on removal bits or other good quality. Use some valve grinding compound to keep it from slipping. and use a speed handle with a knob on the end which allows you to push down hard and gives...

Re: Exhaust air intake scoop
just to help confuse things I'll add that my 172 doesn't have any scoops, just openings in the baffling. I've seen people add scoops to their planes of various types on the theory that they'd get some more airflow for heat, but I've never noticed any problem there. I did make a cutout on my homemade...

Re: Marking Antique Aircraft (our 170s)
decals, vinyl or whatever they are made of now, are what comes from the Cessna factory on all their new airplanes. same with their "paint jobs" on the simple striped birds.

Re: Marking Antique Aircraft (our 170s)
you are a brave man, I painted an airplane once and let's just say I'm much better suited to small patch jobs than large areas. on the numbers, you could go all Peter Max on it and make the numbers flow across and fill up the whole side of the plane, that would be cool. who says that all the numbers...

Re: Marking Antique Aircraft (our 170s)
Bruce, I'd personally also ask my paint shop as they would know every location that's been tried I'm sure and what can/can't be done. I think I'd leave the N# visible on the tail, just because on our airplanes the N# is kind of the identity of the airplane. On warbirds, the N# clashes with the ident...

Re: Interior Vents
and I don't think those wemac upper vents would flow as much air as the old soup cans, you get a pretty good breeze with those. I know they had to get the STC to make it easy to sell the kit but what in the wide wide world of sports would you otherwise need an STC for vents.

Re: ?Sticking Valve or Carb Ice?
hey Dave nice idea on the muffler innards. yes the Hanlon mufflers have internal flame baffles and a couple annuals ago I had to replace one of mine due to that problem. Although it wasn't to the point of blocking things yet so I can't verify the symptoms. also a good idea on the posible intake leak...

Re: Tools
ATS is Aircraft Tool Supply. http://www.aircraft-tool.com/ I've always considered cylinder base wrenches as sort of disposable - you'll probably have to grind some on them to get them to work in certain situations, and you need to really keep them straight when using them or they'll slip and booger ...

Re: Cracked c145-2 case
I've had many cases repaired at Nickson's Machine in Santa Maria CA, and Divco in Tulsa OK. There are several others but I don't have personal experience with those. You'd be amazed at what they can legally and correctly fix. As George pointed out, once the case is welded then everything is machined...

Re: Airform Baffles
Richard, those baffles are the newer (relatively speaking) style as my 172 doesn't have the front parts of those - I can see where it would cause the air to be directed DOWN through the cylinder fins on the front cylinders better which would also lead to less air sneaking by and missing the rear jug...

Re: Fwd Carry Through Spar FAILURE
can you get a look at the carry through (at least the bottom and backside) by pulling down the speaker/overhead light cover and using a borescope inside the headliner? or the underside by coming in through the wingroot - I'd have to go look at my plane to see if there's access for that with the wing...
