Re: climb prop question

I found the best way around "seaplane only is to leave it on floats all year.

Re: B&W 170 Art

That's a great picture. The one we're talking about has a women standing on the float of a 170, she's facing the camera [resembles Audrey Hepburn], the 170 is pointed to the right. You can see the One-Seventy script on the cowl. The location appears to be a big city harbor in the 1950's. It was comm...

Re: B&W 170 Art

The Fly Baby store in Minneapolis had large framed B&W pictures of the era, but not the 170. I tried looking through all the B&Ws on art.com, too many. Thanks for keeping an eye out for it.

Is the WingX approved for 2400 lbs in Canada?

Re: float kit install

What's a reasonable cost for parts and how many hours would an A & P charge to complete the install, assuming that they've done them before?

Re: Climb prop

Maxwell Aircraft in Crystal, MN converted a DM7653 to an MDM7649 seaplane/climb prop for me, years ago. It was a noticeable improvement off the water [ I believe that I was over 2500rpm], but still allowed me to cruise at 102-105mph. I eventually went with an 80x40 with the Kenmore STC, only because...

Re: 170 float performance

We had full fuel, two 220 lbs guys and about 30 lbs of junk and operated off a big lake (river acually, as it was lake Marble Falls and Lake Travis.) I thought it was fun, but I didn't care for the "pendulum" effect of the floats. He later told me he was tempted to abort the takeoff as ta...

Re: 170 float performance

It's relatively easy to come up with a useful seaplane if you're starting with 450 - 600 hp. With the 80x40 prop on the 145hp, I can get out of some tight spots that my 235hp Maule STOL couldn't. It's a great seaplane, but needs to be compared to a Stinson, Tripacer, PA-12, Aeronca Sedan or a Citabr...

Re: 170 float performance

I've had my '52 170B with a STOL kit on floats since 1996. On Edo 2000s, the useful load is about 530 lbs; cruises at 95 with a 80x40 prop, 105+ with the 76x49. It's a 2-seater since the back seat is removed on floats. It's like an Aeronca Sedan, but with fowler flaps, no need to recover and quite a...

Re: AQUA 2200 FLOATS

I've flown my C170 on Edo 2000s for 16 years, enjoying their safety and performance. It's easy to tell, when taxiing on the water if you're not balanced or too heavy. I questioned their legal limit because it appears that, mathematically, they should be enough of a float, for a 170, unless it's bein...

Re: AQUA 2200 FLOATS

Based on the standard gross weight on floats formula... 2000x2= 4000. 4000/1.8= 2222.22, why are Edo 2000s considered too small for a C170? I think the manual says 2106 lbs maximum for a seaplane.

Re: AQUA 2200 FLOATS

Have edo 2130s, used on the C172, ever been put on a C170? That would probably be ideal.

Re: AQUA 2200 FLOATS

If you don't already have some Aqua 2200s, the PK 2300s are approved. If the Aqua factory can't help, that would be quite a battle.
