Re: what did I fry
Here is a link to the Zephtronic trouble shooting guide. http://zeftronics.info/documents/troubleshooting/tshoot.html Start with the simple stuff. Check to see that the circuit breaker is not popped and that you have voltage to the Voltage regulator or alternator control unit. Check to see if you ha...

Re: Weight distribution
Most of these aircraft that have had a Lycoming O-360 or TCM IO-360 engine and constant speed prop installed have to much weight forward to begin with and removing 26 Lbs forward would be a benefit. And while having the Javelin Tank in the back would be a good thing depending on the fuel you have in...

Re: How to fix stripped hub cap holes in Cleveland wheels?
I have used Heli-coils to repair these holes. The problem is that the standard heli-coils are to long and you have to either order shorter ones. Hard to come by, or shorten them. I am sure Parker Hannifin would tell you to replace the wheel. I cut excess coils of with a die grinder. And you need a b...

Re: Installing A TCM IO360
Does the STC require it David? No requirement to have a spinner on a 170 otherwise. I am not sure David has the answer to that one. The STC does require a spinner. I would prefer an older 182 spinner or a Maul spinner. I have not been able to find one in good condition, I am starting to get used to...

Re: Installing A TCM IO360
Update: I just finished moving the Battery to aft of the baggage compartment Via Del Air STC. I went with a new Concord RG25 battery. This accomplished three things. One it made more room in the engine compartment and other than having to crawl into the Baggage compartment to deal with the Battery i...

Re: Flying the Cessna 170A/210
That's still better than an O-300. I fly at 120MPH and never see below 8.5GPH I can go faster at 24 inches or more of manifold pressure. I have seen 134 MPH on other flights and settings. I was trying to establish 65% lean of peak power settings and check total fuel used against the fuel totalizato...

120knots or 120 mph?

Flying the Cessna 170A/210
Yesterday was the first real adventure day flying the Cessna 170 with the TCM IO 360 engine installed. The mission was to fly to a couple of different airports and get some cruise profile, fuel burn numbers and mixture setting. However the event was really off the cuff and the idea was to just go fl...

A few more pictures of Trailing edges. Left Elevator Riveted Trailing Edge RS.jpg In this first picture of the elevator trailing edge the spot welds were breaking out when I first started rebuilding this airplane so I cut to the chase and riveted the whole trailing edge to prevent any further issue....

Re: Flap Skin Source
Thanks for the info. I need to pay closer attention when looking at 170's for now on. I've never noticed one with spot welds. I can confidently say that I have never seen any 170 model with spot welded flap trailing edges. Never let it be said you have never seen spot welded trailing edges from thi...

Re: Flap Skin Source
Is the trailing edge of the flap supposed to have two or three rivets per 3" section (between the ridges)? The set I'm dealing with have three on the trailing edge but the holes aren't lined up nice enough to convince me their original. The leading edge of the flap skin mostly has two but some...

Re: Continental IO360 vs Lycoming 360
Terri, I am guessing from your email address that you are in the Seattle area. I have my TCM IO360 converted Cessna 170A at Auburn. Steve my friends who’s 1956 172 Tail dragger we converted to a Lycoming O-360 is also at Auburn if you would like to come and see the differences. Come on down I will b...

Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
Wow Jim, I never knew there were so many different styles of rivets! Don't know what the one Miles is showing us is, but like several others, it looks like a lift strut attach fitting rivet. I know my pop-rivet tool won't handle it 8O I remember removing rivets from the outer 40 ft section of the w...

Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
The older airplanes had hi-locks, and the newer ones had flush rivets. I don't have an IPC handy, but I think the change was with the 1954 year models. Jim, Del said he is not in the habit of buying hardware from Cessna, but that is the only place he could find these. They are a bit on the uncommon...

GAMI injectors
While not a topic for most 170's as they have carbureted engines. However now that I have been flying the 170/210 with the TCM IO360 installed. I found that my "GAMI" fuel flow spread was 1.1 gallons at full lean. The new Insight avionics graphic engine monitor allows easy viewing of the f...
