Re: running rich
Many thanks to everyone for the inputs. We have checked for leaks in the intake system. Miles, I am using 100ll fuel and the fuel burn seems to be about 7 gal per hour. The plugs are not any oiley but are very "sooty" and black. Have not checked compression. Current plan is to recheck timi...

running rich
I have a 53 170B that I just started flying after a complete rebuild. The engine is a stock 0300 with about 15 hours SMOH. It has new ECI Ni/carbide cylinders. The carb was rebuilt and it has new slick mags. The current problem is the engine is running rich on the lower plugs and especially the left...

Springs for cowl latch H5000-2?
Anyone know of a source for new springs for the cowl door latches on the 53 and later B models? Thanks, Steve.

Re: Elevator travel problem
Problem solved. Measured from the horiz. stab cord as directed by "wingnut" showed exactly the travel as specified. Many thanks, Del. Steve.

Re: Elevator travel problem
Thanks for all the inputs. The instructions I have are exactly as George sent. Thanks for the rod length info. I will try the suggested measurement method using the elevator tips aligned with the horiz stab as a zero point. That could be the answer. I will get back to it on wednesday and will advise...

Re: Elevator travel problem
I have been measuring the elevator angles relative to the horiz stab which is about 3 degrees negative from the top edge of the long fuselage skin that runs down the side from the rear door post to the tail. (That was the reference point on the cessna 140A I owned for several years). And, yes, I hav...

Re: Elevator travel problem
Yes, I have the one-half inch but this does not control the limits of the elevator. The problem could be, as you noted, knowing the correct reference from which to measure the angle. Thanks. Steve

aileron mounting to wing
Are the aileon hinge tangs to be positioned on the bottom of the wing upper trailing edge (on the bottom of the aileron support bracket) or positioned between the upper wing skin and the aileron support bracket. I have seen examples done both ways. No specific information in the 170 parts book nor t...

Elevator travel problem
On the 170B we are rebuilding, we are not getting specified elevator travel. Adjusted for max up travel at the rear bulk head, we are getting 23 degrees up using the surface of the horiz stab as a reference. Also we are getting 25 degrees down travel using the same reference. This is more or less th...

primer line
Is is correct to assume the one-eigth copper line sold by Aircraft Spruce is the correct line to use for the primer line and the oil pressure gage line? The new line is not as hard as the old line removed from the 170 but could this be to work hardening of the old line? Is there a better choice than...

Re: paint color that matches polished aluminum
Thanks for the responses. The objective is not to "fool anyone" into thinking the ailerons are polished. The objective is to find a color that looks good with the polished wings. There are two local aircraft with polished wings and painted control surfaces but no one knows the exact color ...
