Engine failure

I read with interest the tread below regarding 170 that went off the run way in NH. This past sunday I saw something i hope I don't see again in the same vein. I was in Montreal visiting family and went to the big park in the east end of town with my brother. We are right downtown when brother bob s...

George Thanks for the info. The oil issue of course is a big deal so I am reassured that 175 degrees is safe for the engine. Got 70 hours on the bird and really staring to have fun. Cheers Gary

oil hot enuf?

Flying alot this week and a little surprised to see lots of what looks like water coming from the crankcase breather drain tube on the floor under the plane a few hours after parking it. The oil temp runs 175 on the scott gauge. Is this too low to cook out the water? Do you guys see the same thing a...

Romeo Tango I liked the forward slip vs the Freudian slip comment. It is hard to work in a little psyciatry when talking about flying tho some may think we are a little nuts. I have wrestled with the wheel landing and have yet to "get it " consistently but it is sobering to read the landin...

2 things; yeah made it to arlington first ever fly in and camped very cool and of course spent too much dough on goodies. I see Dave has mentioned Red's Horse Ranch as a place the 170 folks go. Can you tell me where that is??I got snookered on the scheduling for the Kalona meeting which was dissapoi...

Got ther trim tab actuator back from my friendly AME. I wasn't a party to the rebuild but he did shim it and all the play is gone. Re installed and careful not to disturb the trim cable and chain positions. Happily the clunk at the trim tab is gone. Again thanks for your guidance on this one. Cheers G

George/Joe Thanks for info. Going to tackle the problem this weekend as you described and will have the ame oversee the safe repair and reassembly. I will let you know what shape the screw and nut are in when I get it apart, Thanks again Gary

George, Thanks for your speedy reply. Been back to the airport and wiggled every cessna trim tab mostly 172s and 150s and many seem to have the same play. Anyway for my own mental health I am going to remove it and inspect it and go from there. I got 40 hours on the bird and this is the first wrinkl...

trim tab-jack screw-too much play??

I was surprised this morning while doing the walk-around to find some play in the elevator trim tab. Getting under the tail the attachments for the push rod ends are ok but on remaval of the inspection cover under horizontal stab i noted about 1/16th play in the jack screw: ie when I move the trim t...

Thomas Good for you. I also just started flying my plane last week and I agree the 170 feels light on its feet and in flight as well, at least when compared to a 172. I found for landing so far a little power makes the 3 pointers very predictable. Did a couple of wheel landing not as pretty but at t...

First Solo Flight 170-B

I think I told you all I finally got my plane flying last month unfortunately with my AME ridding shot gun. Then lots of rain but finally some good weather and after a couple hours with my local tailwheel instructor he cut me loose to do it on my own and although not a lot of wind lately all went we...

static full power run up/what rpm???????????

For full power static run- up what RPM would you consider accepatble?? I have been checking this out with my AME and we are getting 2350. He feels higher would be better. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Gary

Well here it is 2 weeks later and the rain finally gave me a break and did flight number 2. My first effort identified a heavy left wing, and lots of air leaks into the cabin and not much from the heater. I adjusted the cams on the right wing and plugged alot of holes around the wing roots and upper...

The thing with the camlocs is figuring out the grip length but now that you mention it I think recall reading that description/installaton in the 170 assn manual which I hope would have some part number info and details on how long the camlos should be. Seems to me a very positive way to lock the do...
