Re: Cessna 170 used in a movie

I build models for a hobby and always looking for a subject that is unique. Saw a movie on TV called "The Rundown" staring the "ROCK". In the movie he is flown to a jungle landing stip in central/south America in a single engine aircraft. On a model website 'hyperscale' it was d...

Re: High altitude t/o with stock 170

Flaps will increase total takeoff distance (brake release to obstacle) an inordinate amount at high density altitudes. Cessna has used new airplanes and professional test pilots to determine and document that. You are right George.....of course.....except for situations in which the runway surface ...

Re: High altitude t/o with stock 170

http://www.backcountrypilot.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10394/normal_strip_low_res.JPG That thread will be entitled 10 degree vs 20 degree flaps. Which one gets me out of a very bumpy 1200 ft strip with big trees a the end the quickest shortest and best. Note I'm screwed at this place if anything h...

Re: High altitude t/o with stock 170

Wondering what the wisdom is for a stock 170 takeoff at high density altitudes. I know the book says the distance is longer with 1 notch of flaps. I tend to disagree at least for my 5-6k strips around CA. I tend to get the airplane into ground effect and slowly retract the flaps. It seems to get me...

Re: Hangar finance possibilities?

Thanks for the input guys. I'm trying one last round of negotiations and then I suspect this deal will a go, or I'll just forget that pipe dream and move on with my life.

Re: Hangar finance possibilities?

Yes, however the bank wants the release and consent included as part of the lease agreement with the county. The form that the bank has is a standard form they use with mobile homes and such, the county has agreed to it with some modifications they made which hold the bank liable for the 25 year lea...

Hangar finance possibilities?

I'm trying to buy a steel hangar that is already constructed and located on leased land. An old friend has retired from flying and has offered it to me. I can get a new lease on the land from the county, but they so far refuse the allow a release and consent to be filed with it for my bank. Essentia...

Re: Lycoming conversion cowl mod

Ive done this conversion also, and I would recommend not putting the blisters on your cowl untill you actually do the engine conversion. It will be difficult to locate the blisters correctly without the motor actually in there. You can cut the holes without destroying the paint if you are carefull, ...

Standby venturi system

Has anyone here set up their venturi system as a standby backup for an engine driven vacuum pump?

Is a hand held mic actually required? I was just skimming through the FARs the other day and remember wondering about that.

Re: gear and tires

I have a 52B with the 180 Lyc. also on 180 gear with 800X6s, it works on rough fields and seems to be a good compromise for me as I frequently go from pavement to dirt. Those big tires weigh a lot and they drag a lot in the air, if you need them then more power to you, but they are a lot of money an...

Re: climb prop question

I don't have any experience with the 80/42, but I did have a 76/53 on my plane when it had the stock motor. The 76/53 was nice at lower altitudes, however the higher I flew the less it pulled (obviously) and every summer when the density altitude was high I would consider having it pitched up to a 7...

Re: upper cowl problems

I made new upper cowl doors for mine, and used the Dip Davis latches because my old OEM latches were shot. There are pros and cons to the Dip Davis latches just like there are with the original latches. When reassembling the cowling on the plane I have learned to leave all the screws loose on the lo...

Re: Avcon fuel primer

Copper it is. Also is there no consenses on the number of cylinders. After having no primer for years I feel like half my cylinders primed will be a big improvement. Most airplanes have some kind of enrichment device for starting. I wonder why airplanes don't have chokes? My friend has a Varga with...
