Was it even a thing people could reliably read from the ground? Because I haven't seen this technology getting adopted anywhere, while planes pulling good ol' advertising "flags" are still around.

I'm sorry if this isn't appropriate or sensitive, but... how did the pilot check the car and everything, did the police do it after the pilot gave them the general location of the body and car, or did he land/fly at an extremely low altitude as to see what happened?
