Re: 180hp conversion for the 170A

I flew De Haviland Doves, way back when, for a small commuter that repalced he Gypsey Moth engine with Lycomings and super charged them. The modified Dove was one of the most enjoyable airplanes I have had the opportunity to fly. I liked having to ability to adjust the manifold pressure manually, as...

Re: Best Three Mods

The Wick Air steering arm extension is a new one to me. Is the advantage supposed to be better response on the ground? Does the wick steering arm extension actually come through with improved ground performance? Looks like something else for mesquite to catch and damage.

Re: Where's your 430?

My 430 was installed in the hole vacated by the previous radio - down by the left knee. However, the OBSs are stacked one on top of the other down the center of the panel. The 430 is backed up by a King. The arrangement works well enough. I am able to make all the entrys using my left hand and when ...

Re: Fuel smell

Check the area behind the fuel vent, above the cabin. Som 170s, including mine, will spit fuel out of the overhead vent in turbulence, when the tank is full or nearly so. If so, there should be some tell-tail streaking behind the overhead fuel vent.

Re: Preventing spark plug fouling

The first 6 months or so after I bought my 170B I would get a mag drop during run up the next flight. A good friend with some experience with the C-145 suggested I lean it on the ground and not just a little bit. I have not had a problem since - just remember to push the mixture forward before takeo...

Re: Carpet on the tunnel

I was so impressed with George's tunnel cover and flap handle boot that i decided to try to duplicate it on my onw aircaft. The tunnel cover on my aircraft was completely carpeted over by the previous owner - there is no way to remove the cover without cutting it out of the carpet. I went looking fo...

Re: You may live in Alaska...

I have a friend, who is very well off. I visited his home awhile back and was admiring the Buffalo head mounted over his fire place. I said to my friend "that must have been an exciting hunt", "care to share the experience with me?" My friend explained, he flew into the hunting l...

Re: Leaking ragwing fuel tank cap

We need to know which type of fuel cap you are using on the left tank. If, like most of us, you probably have a conventional non-vented cap on the left tank and a "Red" vented cap on the right tank. The newer "red" style caps, in my experience, tend to prevent water contamination...

Re: Top Windows?

Just some advice regarding top windows from experience with them. We put overhead windows in our C-206, expecting that the windows would improve our ability to see and avoid traffic in turns, etc. As it turns out, the overhead windows have done little to improve spotting and avoiding traffic. What w...

Re: Sudden onset tailwheel shimmy

When you replaced the tailwheel did you also replace the main tailwheel flat spring? Often, on older airplanes, the main tailwheel spring has lost some of the original arc, or has flattened out a bit. The flatter main spring results in poor tailwheel king pin alignment and contributes to tailwheel s...

Re: Turning radius

I have always understood that speed and weight had the greatest affect on turning radius. I find it hard to believe the 175 wing would result in a significantly greater turn radius. The addition of the STOL kit and VGs you mentioned will contribute positively to a short turn radius. There is a good ...
