Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Went ahead and split the case. Ugh!!! Everything was like new!!! With only 97 hrs SMOH, i figured it would be. But in a weird way.....I was kinda hoping I'd find something horrible to justify the tear down!! Lol. But.... after sitting for 18+ years, I would have never had the peace of mind if I hadn...

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Well said Gary. I have to remember to be careful to not have my content be presented as a "how to" series of articles. They are only a reflection on "what I did" only!! Lol. But yes, another clarification I need to make about sandpaper...."aluminum oxide ONLY" please.

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

I agree completely. And thus the reason I preach ONLY stainless steel. Because it will impregnate the aluminum with trash that will cause issues. So..... let me clarify. Do not use Home Depot wire wheels on a drill or high speed die grinder! They are junk and not real stainless brushes. Use only hig...

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Before and after stripping. I'm using "Jabsco" professional. It's as good as anything else I've found but not cheap. First coat takes off top color and softens primer. Scrape with hard plastic or phenolic scraper. Even a wooden block with a sharp wedge cut into it works well. Second applic...

And this is why it is so important to clean, scotchbrite, acid etch, and alodine around the rivet heads and seams! It's the first areas to let go of the paint over time.

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Whew!! I was wondering. Nobody was playing airplane with me anymore. Lol!! I enjoy sharing in the hopes that there's someone with a stalled project that doing these just may motivate them to get started again. Life is short. Play hard!!!

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Finally!!!! The tailwheel was frozen solid!! Couldn't figure out why. Finally got it apart with soaking and gentle tapping/prying. Bead blasted everything and it all passes. Just need to replace the thrust washers and bearings.

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Panel stripped and lower sub panel drilled off. Will make a new, better laid out/organized sub panel that will have all the switches, CBs, engine and environmental controls, slimline comm (+ABS-b txpdr) and glove box in it. Will require only the bad looking wires.

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Engine off and partially torn down. It only has 97 hrs since major by a reputable shop with all parts standard. Almost NO west on anything. Mixed emotions about the tear down....but it has to be done for my piece of mind. It's been sitting for 18 years! Still.....it's really clean inside. Crank flan...

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Goodmorning all. Where is the best place to buy new motor mount for my 170B? I'll need both the "engine to mount" and "mount to firewall". Thanks in advance.

Re: The journey begins. 170B project.

Don't necessarily have to get it in writing.....just have to get the work and logbook entry done and signed by an A&P (myself in this case) or an IA if I go the 337 route. It's not something you'd need to re certify at every annual.
