Nope, at least not in a Cessna 170. The main sticking point on the medical is whether you have been denied a medical, vs. letting it just lapse. If you have been denied or refused a medical, you cannot use your drivers license as a medical.

It's an interesting read on eaa.org.

Do alternators put less of a load on the accessory gears than generators? I'm thinking that an alternator is lighter, but I don't know if the mechanical load of a 35 amp alternator is lower than a 35 amp generator.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Franklin 165. Yes, and it takes a lot of rudder :-) And they call it the "small" tail Stinson.

Bought a plane (Stinson 108-1))

But for better or worse, it's a 1946 Stinson 108-1. The opportunity sort of fell in my lap, and I'm quite pleased with my purchase, it fits all of my needs.

I'll still hang around though.

Thanks for all the advice,

Then there is always doing the "practice emergency engine out" and landing on the intersecting runway (assuming you can land short of the main runway that is, safety always comes first...)

And it's good practice ;-)

Shock Cooling and spins

I'm not sure I agree with you that take-off has a greater rate-of-change in temps than going to idle at altitude, because at take-off, you are increasing heat-creation as well as increasing heat dissipation capability via higher-speeds. A taxi to take off involves going from 1) low-cooling (no airfl...

Great story. Here's wishing everyone Happy Holidays, and hopefully I'll be a flying member/owner in the new year! :-)

Sounds like...

Well, from what I've been looking at and what I've been reading, it sounds like it would make more sense for me to look for a 170 that has almost what I want rather than purchasing one and replacing the panel. I get the impression that replacing the panel is quite a bit of money, not including the i...

Instrument panel upgrade.

If anyone has completely replaced an instrument panel, could you please email me offline and let me know: 1) what you did? 2) how much it cost? I'm considering possibly buying a 170 and upgrading an older non-IFR panel to a more modern IFR panel. Looking at the Garmin GNS 430 being central in the up...

The most IFR I want to do is occasionally punch through the stratus (ceilings around 1000 feet or so) that is almost always there during the summer months. I've done some IFR training many years ago, but due to family illness, job change, etc... I had to drop it. During that training, I flew in a go...

Greetings

Thought I was say hi. I just signed up for the Cessna 170 group, and will be looking for a 170 or 170A sometime in the near future. I'd like to do my instrument training in it. I fly out of WVI in California, probably most of my flying will be west of the Sierra range (where my family is). Any advic...
