Auto Fuel vs AvGas
Thanks Joe for sharing the data via Light Plane Maint. I now have some reading to do. This subject has been chewed on before in this forum and like Ford vs Chevy, el al. There will probably never be complete agreement. I haven't read the data Joe shared with us. I suspect a lot of it has already bee...

Tach Problems
One other thing to check is to be sure you tach drive oil seal (on the accessory case) isn't leaking engine oil into the tach cable housing. If this happens and isn't caught pretty quickly the oil will work its way into your tach and ruin it. (Under extreme conditions you can end up with a bunch of ...

Pre Purchase Annual Inspection
I will ditto George's recommendations regarding NOT getting a "pre purchase" inspection and GETTING a full blown annual inspection. Once upon a time as I was finishing up my private training, two of my friends and I found a 1964 C-182 @ our local airport for sale. It was a one owner, full ...

Stall Warning
George, is the reason the B models are required to have a stall warning device is because they are slower than the 170 & A models? (Wink)

Sentry Cylinders-Fort Worth
When I overhauled my O-300B in '98 or '99 I purchased 6 new ECI cylinders through Senty and did so after confiring w/ Sentry. I had two that were junk & 4 that they said needed welding, which they do, & then they would have been sent to Tulsa for rechroming, if there was enough metal left to...

Choosing a 170
John, let me extend my welcome to you. You have made one of the best decisions so far by joining the Cessna 170 Assn. You will find a lot of good information (and a lot of opinions) on this website. You will not find a better bunch of people to associate with, whether on this website or in person at...

Firewood problem
Why not just toss the wood burning stove out (not while in the air!) & replace with a good propane burning heater. A half dozen or so Coleman type bottles will last on quite a long trip. You can still use the hole where the rotating beacon was as a flu to rid the bad fumes!!!!! Don't know what a...

Fuel Caps
Thanks guys for the input. George, I am trying to keep my "172 TD" ORGINAL, whatever that is! George, didn't someone post a thread some time back with a different way to put on Monarch moat covers so that the neck or whatever could be removed w/o destroying the sealed down moat cover? I ha...

FM Filter Adapter
John, "I feel your pain"! Seriously, I feel the same way about some of these FAA rules. No, I don't want to compromise my safety or that of my passengers nor the mechanical integrity of my engine/ airframe, etc., but it torques me to pay 2-3 times the price for an item JUST because it has ...

Funny noises coming from the landing gear!
Glad to hear that you apparently found the problem yesterday. When you pulled the fairing, did you wedge (shim)('s) have one or two bolts? Forgot to mention to you that when I first had the problem & looked inside (mine has two bolts) they bolts weren't safetied! I went ahead and did so which sh...

Gas Caps & Gaskets
George, or others, do you have suggestions for the best place (spelled cheapest) to purchase the vented gas caps? For some time now I have been using some automotive caps (chrome--look good & don't rust) and they are vented. The only thing is gaskets of the type we all recognize that fit "l...

Digital vs Steam Gauges
The above post reminds me of what a friend of mine, who flew along with us to Reklaw in his Kitfox, said about digital gauges. He said if he ever a built another plane it definitely would NOT have digital gauges. (This is from a mid 50 year old retired Air Force U-2 pilot.) His complaint is that whi...

MMO
I would be really curious John if you could give me the information regarding using MMO in the "proper amount". What is the proper amount? Where is the data stating what the proper amount is? What does the data say MMO will do? Not trying to give you a hard time, just asking. I used MMO at...

Reklaw 2003
Reklaw was a huge success this year with near perfect weather on Friday. (Quite a contrast from last year when only about 7 of us made it in [flying]and several of us parked our planes there for two weeks!) Most folks, myself included, took advantage of the weather to arrive early and set up to watc...

Strobe Switch
There are many others out there better qualified to address this subject than me, so this is just my "opinion". I have Whelen strobes (wing tips & belly) & mine is operated by a 15 amp (I think) circuit breaker. It has been working fine for over 3 yrs. My suggestion is, "Don't...
