Re: Aft Tail Skin Fabrication
Very happy with today....I was able to spend a few amazing hours with Jim Musgrove - see results below....Thank you, Jim! :D Next step is to deconstruct the bellcrank assembly, clean it all up, along with the bulkhead and staple it all back together. Sounds easy enough.... 1026131617.jpg 1026131822....

Maybe left there to balance the plane out....? You wouldn't want that flying around in your empenage...hilltop170 wrote:Mine had a bucking bar in the tail, maybe been there since the factory. Luckily, it too was stuck in place with goo.

Re: Rudder (and other ) cables
One really cool thing about this rudder cable business, is that I found the original knob for my fresh air vent way back in the fuselage stuck to a glob of this anti-corrosion goo that someone applied way back when. The knob is in perfect condition, probably preserved in the goo for who knows how lo...

Re: Rudder (and other ) cables
Just wait until you have to remove the fuel valve! That one is fun... Oh yes, we've already had our fun discussion about that one....I still haven't regrown all the skin on the back of my hand from that adventure. Know what else I had to do today? When we pulled the wing off I had undone the turnbu...

Re: Rudder (and other ) cables
Well, it's done. I never want to do that crap ever again. Who builds these damned planes - oompa-loompas? Pixie fairies? Geez! It's impossible to get a full grown hand in these places. I don't even want to think about reinstalling them. Anyway, ready to get new cables....

Re: Rudder (and other ) cables
Thanks Tim for the detailed explanation. I am not sure how to deal with the mid-fairlead, but I guess I'll see later today. So, the rudder- and aileron cable are on the same pulley block? Am I looking at the highlighted smaller pulleys in the illustration? So I guess the whole group has to be disass...

Ok, glad I asked. I would have thought stainless trumps all. I don't have a seaplane rating, so I certainly do hope I'll stay clear of salt water.... Thank you!blueldr wrote:... galvanized are better.

Re: Rudder (and other ) cables
Seeing how TCDowney's source reproduces exactly what they are given, I may go that route. Run them up we will take them to the riggers and see what the cost will be. Ok, I'll see what / when I can do...once the fog lifts. You're at BVS, right? For anyone: TCDowney and I were discussing where the ru...

Trust me, you DO NOT want to see ME in a tutu...Could liven up the next 170-fly-in, though 8O . For the benefit of all, I called TCDowney today to ask about his services. He has a shop in Anacor...

Re: Rudder (and other ) cables
Are they removed? All but removed. My tail is open and the second to last bulkhead is now out to re-form the skin. My A&P pricked his finger on the starboard cable, then noticed it is fraying. It could easily be removed, I guess...? What are you thinking, Tom?

Rudder (and other ) cables
Hello All,
Is McFarlane the only source for rudder cables? Nothing against McFarlane, but I like options, I guess.

Yea! the wing is back on!
I got a new bulkhead from Corvalis Aero Services (Warren Ruck) in Oregon. They may have some odds and ends from 170s.
