Yeah, I wish the shop that did mine had used something a little better the first time!

Re: 34V pretty much done

Tom, if you go with a skull cap, you might want to make sure you use something a little better than the single tinnerman screw that comes with it. Otherwise, you will be buying a new spinner....and possibly touching up the prop. I learned that one the hard way.

Removing/re-installing wings from a Metalized '48

Anyone ever taken the wings off a '48 with the wings metalized? Any issues or potential problems associated?

Looking for A&P IA assistance in the DFW area

Any 170 A&P IAs in the Dallas-Ft Worth area? I may need some assistance with my '48 170 (currently sitting at Mineral Wells). Just to recap from some posts several months ago: While attempting to move my 170 from San Diego to our new home in Norfolk, VA, 96V experienced a mag seizure that subseq...

Photos of blast tube placement

Can anyone share photos of their blast tube placement on both sides?

Mine was altered and my A&P and I are trying to recreate the original design.

'48 Flap cable issue

All, I just got this email from my friend (A&P IA) in Texas who was finishing up the engine re-install on 96V. Getting ready to test fly the plane, he noticed a problem with the flaps and upon closer examination sent me this: We looked at the flaps yesterday…. they have slings inside the wings t...

Re: More bad news....

The other option is to inquire of salvage yards. Airplanes are being flipped as we speak in the storms crossing southern U.S. and some of them have engines with good times remaining. I'll second this....salvage from a storm damaged airplane was going to be my backup plan if it the teardown inspecti...

Re: Want to re-fabric metalized 170

Not sure about the least expensive.....but replacing the wings is the only right way to do it because of the drilled out ribs from the metalization. If you really wanted to convert it back to a rag wing.....your best bet is to call Univair and see about buying the brand new (uncovered) wings: Wing f...

Wingspan of the '48?

Anyone know what the wingspan of the '48 is?

All I can find on the web is 36' for the 170B, but wondering if it is the same on the ragwing. Looking into same hangar options and not co-located with my airplane at the moment.

Thanks!

Re: Installing Salvage Engine

Sometimes even a blind squirrel finds an acorn. I bought a used 0-300 about four years ago for 3500 (2500 TT 1250 SMOH 800 STOH) It appears all parts were still standard dimensions. Engine was very clean inside, fairly new slick mags, carb, starter and generator (not used) in great condition. After...

Re: Installing Salvage Engine

wouldn't be my first choice... Yup....if it sounds too good to be true....probably is. Here is the follow up: Guy wanted $8k for the engine and all accessories plus prop. Advertised as 2550 TTSN. 450 SMOH. Airplane damaged 6-7 months ago in forced landing due to fuel starvation, but prop stopped ho...

O-300 D Install STC

So how do I actually purchase the Association's STC for O-300 D install on my airplane? The STC order list has a disclaimer that they are just copies of the STCs and we must purchase the actual STC for our specific airplane from the STC holder which in this case is the Association....so how to compl...

Re: Skull Cap and O-300 D?

So Andrew, if your IA thinks the installation of the skull cap is in question. This is a big if. Then your IA, not us, needs to contact his local FSDO for clarification and perhaps approval to install the skull cap. ---- FWIW, when the time comes I'll give him a link to this and the other thread an...

Re: Skull Cap and O-300 D?

Bruce, that was one of the problems we ran into with one of our Members (Don Khulenschmidt) last year, if you recall. Don wanted to install a skull cap in lieu of the bullet spinner. His IA correctly questioned the fact that our STC installation instructions specify that a (bullet) spinner be inclu...
