Re: New adventures
Lets just say it's a suped up IO-520. Built by one of the better recognized performance engine shops around. With takeoff power approved at 2850 it's pretty impressive. The dyno numbers showed well north of 300hp. It started as a PPonk O-470-50 and grew from there so that's what the data tag still s...

Re: New adventures
I had many existential questions once I started flying the 180. The only solution I've come up with is to be Richard Pulley when I grow up. 170, 180, 195. Add a nice Beech 18 to that and there is nothing one can't conquer. I'll second that!! Haha. I was thinking more like a DC3 but a beec...

Re: New adventures
Being a 53 model (first year of production), 30C basically has the identical cabin size as a 170. This makes the plane very familiar to fly. The difference of course is the power. She has an impressive power plant that gives me about 1700fpm with full fuel and myself. She'll cruise around 150ktas @ ...

New adventures
Well it's settled... after owning my 170 for 11 years now I have decided to move on to a 180. The 170 has served me very well but a growing family has lead me to purchase a 1953 180. I wanted to say a big thanks to the members of this association. The collective knowledge and support found here is i...

Re: IFR Panel Instrument Arrangement
Bruce, The lower picture in your post is my panel several years back. I have used that panel to fly lots of actual IFR and got my CFII with it. I find it to be quite user friendly and easy to fly but it does take a little time and training to get the scan figured out. I have added the use of an iPad...

Re: Cockpit Light Pollution (52 B model/piano key panel)
I found the same problem with my panel and temporarily put some tape across the gap behind the stand off panel. What you quickly discover is that even with this gap covered you still get a light glare on the windscreen coming from the front of the panel because of the tilt of the panel. I ended up m...

Re: 1951 C170A Flap Issue
I had the same issue on my 170A. The problem is your gust lock is not latching correctly. If the the latch (at the end of the flap cable) is not able to grab the stationary bracket and the flap is manually lowered, it will get bound upon trying to return to the retracted position. If the flap handle...

Re: Engine Mounted Oil Filter Adapter
I called the 800 number on the FM website and got the good folks at Aero Accessories. The guy I talked to was familiar with the crush washer but had no idea about the fiber gasket. He told me I was the third call today looking for this. Apparently this company does manufacturing for Tempest who boug...

Any luck with this George? I'm looking for a gasket kit and can't find one anywhere. Frustrating...gahorn wrote:I am presently in a "phone tag" relay with the FM Enterprises guy and hopefully we'll connect and have good news to share shortly on that product.

Yep, 7 degrees. When I put my new zero degree AI in, it came back out after a few weeks since the horizon didn't line up. Put in a new 7 degree tilt unit and it's perfect.

Does anyone happen to know if you can successfully replace just the accessory case gasket without having to remove the sump?

Re: VOR/NDB IAP's going away
Dave, that will no longer be possible. There will be no more VOR approaches to fly! I guess you would need to find 2 LOC approaches and an ILS.DaveF wrote:The PTS specifies three approaches, two nonprecision and one precision. So you could fly a VOR, localizer, and ILS.

Re: VOR/NDB IAP's going away
What about the requirement for the instrument rating? It is currently required that you perform a long cross country with 3 different types of approaches at 3 different airport. We are quickly eliminating the types of approaches available to us. Also, every instrument examiner I know requires at lea...
