Re: dying of thirst . dehydration

A stones throw is the length of a cricket pitch . That’s 66ft . A normal throw of a stone is 66 ft or if you bowl a cricket ball it’s 66ft or a chain. I used to play cricket at school and recall some of the rules of then. The cricket pitch was 10 ft wide once but the “poms” [english] requested [forc...

Re: 1948 170

Firstly, I am NO expert on 1948 cessna 170,s . But I do own a 170A series. When I replaced my firewall and for insulation i used a black closed foam with aluminium foil covering on one side and a thin “lead “ foil on the other . I purchased it from Spruce. It’s about 1in in thickness . When I replac...

Re: dying of thirst . dehydration

so sorry George ,but unfortunately in this country all fluids are measured in litres. But height/distance is measured in feet in our aviation world ,but there are exceptions . Now to confuse you even more , on the ground we talk in terms of temperature it’s Celsius BUT when flying it’s measured in F...

Re: RC Allen Mini6

All my vacuum gauges are gone . They have been replaced with 2 of G5,s but I left my ASI and Altimeter behind . All engine instruments are now “Electronic International digital . HUGE weight saving . The G5,s have each a standby battery . My biggest problem was aligning the Magatron in the wing . Ge...

Re: Alternator Upgrade

I would be doing a load analysis of the electrical system and including dead battery situation. In Australia we have to have a listing of all electrical loads in our log book. I had a STC for a 100amp alternator when I put the Lycoming in originally. While it worked a treat it was a massive overkill...

dying of thirst . dehydration

We have had nearly 3 weeks of constant rain and yesterday blue sky. A friend and myself decided to go for a couple of hours flying. Nil wind , some clouds at 6,000 ft nothing to worry about. Temperature on ground 95deg F ,humidity was 97%. We were in a Cessna 172 [his]. we had 120 liters in tanks . ...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

While there was a heap of thread drift the subject matter i was referring to was about the repair of the undersurface of a 172 C wing, We were using 6061 T6 alloy . But the next size up from standard and dimpled with a press. Our instructions came from Cessna engineering. why Cessna wanted counter s...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

Just come from a meeting of a number of aerospace engineers and some i have worked with for many years . We were discussing Cessna repairs and drawings from Cessna . It appears that Cessna paid advice from engineering isn’t consistent with their structural repair manuals . [This is the reason of the...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

We had to do a repair on the undersurface skin of a wing of a cessna 172 C . It had a gouge of about 10 to 12 ins in its undersurface and about 1 in deep . This was due to some one trying to jack the aircraft using the tie down ring on the strut. The jack went for a walk. The damage was then bondo f...

Re: Install instructions 180 Franklin

while the Franklin engine is a interesting engine and has some great aspects ,but i was under the impression parts are a issue these days . I know of [well did know of] a 220hp engine fitted to a Cessna 170b and it flew like a cat off a hot tin roof. However obtaining parts was a big issue for servi...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

The one on ebay does it have the same part number . It might “look” the same BUT ,does it have the same thickness and aluminium type . Many people assume 2024 T3 is used every where But surprising it does not . One would question the condition of the ebay part and it’s aluminium condition under the ...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

We had the SIDS program forced upon us and thus a very detailed inspection had to be carried out . This inspection wasn’t flexible at all. The aircraft was stripped totally and I found my whole aircraft had been zinc chromated at one stage of its life . The gear box section was closely inspected as ...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

It was only doing the SIDS inspection that I realised my wedges [shims] were fitted upside down on one leg. [LH]. My aircraft was originally a project aircraft that i built /finished up. There was nothing in the logs about a gear box replacement at all. I had a number of qualified people measured an...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

I think the less “disturbing” of an airframe in rebuilding is the best thing to do especially if you do not have a fuselarge jig. Projects are great when things go right and you know you are right. I have had people say “I followed the structural repair manual to a T “. It’s some times interpretatio...
