Re: IFR certified
Anyone have any experience with the VAL INS-422 integrated VOR, glide slope, and marker beacon? I've heard it's not as good (poorer reception and clumsy interface) as a conventional radio and instrument, but it's a LOT cheaper and will save me from altering my panel too much...something I want to av...

Re: OT. I mean REALLY OT!
Per my friend at EOD, the only acceptable method of dealing with destabilized dynamite is to use another explosive to detonate it in place. Touching or moving it in any way is a colossal no-no. To illustrate this he told me of a residence in rural Nevada he went to with a dozen boxes of weeping dyna...

Re: New exhaust tailpipes don't quite fit
One of our good supporters is AWI (Aerospace Welding Inc, Eagan, MN) Tell 'em we sent you and talk to Charlie Felds. 1-800-597-4315 Thanks for the info...even though Knisley's is only twenty minutes from my front door, I've become so frustrated with the poor quality, poor support, and high prices t...

Re: New exhaust tailpipes don't quite fit
I've had three transactions with Knisley, and two of them have been complete disasters. I'm NOT impressed with the quality of their work or service.

Re: Upgrades
I’m a stickler for mechanical integrity, but I’m not super concerned when it comes to the paper side of things. My 170B has bubble windows (love them!), with a logbook entry listing them as a minor modification… I have no idea how legal that is, but my mechanic signs of the annual every year, ...

Re: Larger Tires for a 170B?
Hilltop,
That's quite a difference in size. I agree that spending some money up front for the larger wheels, which will then allow you to put on less expensive tires, makes sense for some people...especially those of us who have to do a lot of our flying off of pavement

Re: Larger Tires for a 170B?
Asside from the STC, is there any advantage to the 8:50x10 verses the 8:50x6? If the outside dimensions of the tires are the same, it seems like the larger wheel would reduce the ability of the tire to cushion the bumps.

Re: installing bas shoulder harnesses
I helped my mechanic install the BAS shoulder harnesses, and from what I can tell you couldn’t do it with one person…you need two people. Aside from that it wasn’t too bad…a few hours well spent. Now that the harnesses are in I can see that it doesn’t make much difference which buckle syst...

Re: Larger Tires for a 170B?
I have the 8:50 x6's on my 170B...it's what it came with when I bought it and when it came time to change tires, that's what I stayed with. I've heard several people opine that if you need anything larger than that, you need a different plane, as the spring gear on the Cessna is too bouncy for landi...

Re: MOA basics
My experience with MOA's is that they are always active. On two occasions I've had Center tell me the MOA is cold while I watched a couple jets doing four-G turns below me. A couple jet-jockies have told me that most of the time while flying low they are just using see-and-avoid...no spotter plane, ...

Re: What is the best STOL Kit ?
I bought my 170 with a Horton stal kit, and I've never flown a 170 without one. But the 170 will fly a full 18 knots slower than my 140. In fact, it will lift off before the airspeed indicator is working. About the only thing I have trouble with is trying to make it land in gusty wind conditions...i...

Cargo Net
A while ago I saw a C180 with a heavy duty cargo net strung from floor to ceiling about three inches aft of the door post. It looked like a pretty good way to keep items in the back from smacking you in the head in the event of a crash. It was also handy for hanging things you might want to reach ba...

Re: installing bas shoulder harnesses
Thanks for the info...I found BAS to be a very good company to deal with, and the kit they sent looks very complete. For what it's worth, I went with the seaplane style buckle because I thought it would be more out of the way when it's not in use. The other set-up looks easier to use, but looked lik...

installing bas shoulder harnesses
Anyone have any hints about installing the BAS harnesses? So far the trickiest part seems to be making the precision cut in the head liner.
