I likewise won my vg's in a raffle. They look cool. Here's where I found the differences. 1. Lift the plane off the ground at very low airspeed into ground effect and it doesn't feel mushy. 2. I measured best angle of climb performance before and after and found a slight improvement. If I really nee...

Franklin 165

Wow! This is exciting. You are the only other person I know of besides myself with the Franklin 165 in a 170B. Ten or eleven years ago I had my engine overhauled by Jerry DeBatista at Deb's Aircraft in Grants Pass, Oregon. I have been pretty pleased with his work but last year a couple of bearings o...

vortex generators

I have Microaerodynamics vg's on my 55 170b. Spent about $25 and 8 cold hours of labor on them. I won the kit in the raffle in Anchorage. My son and I did some before and after testing. I don't see much difference with aileron control at low speeds and I can't feel any great difference with the elev...

I got 8.50's approved with a 337. With the 8.50's on I don't much care for the minimal clearance between the tire and the brake caliper so my machinist son made a set of quarter inch spacers which go between the wheel and the brake disc to give more clearance. That's covered in the 337 as well. I ca...

52 170B for sale

Remember the story from Eric about the 170 that was groundlooped/flipped in Port Townsend last February? I saw Eric a few weeks ago and he told me someone in Bellingham where I live had bought the wreck. Just yesterday I saw a flier posted at BLI advertising the plane for sale after the installation...

aileron rigging

No answer but a related question. My 55 170B has a heavy left wing. We've tried adjusting the eccentrics which control wing warp and we've tried things which I forget. One thing we haven't tried is aileron rigging. When the yoke is neutral both ailerons are not in line with the flaps. Left aileron i...
