Leaf Springs
Spruce advertises the main spring or all 5 springs. The Model 170 uses 5 springs, but the A & B models only use 4 of those 5. I'm guessing the unused leaf could be removed? I was leaning towards replacing all of them, but I wonder how much of a chore it would be to remove the unused leaf.

Tailwheel Leaf Springs
The bottom leaf spring on my 170A is in need of replacement. A price check for the 0542106 leaf through Cessna revealed a list price of $1,958.00!! 8O My curiosity is piqued by Aircraft Spruce advertising what appears to be the same leaf for $66 and change. I was wondering if anyone has had experien...

When taxiing, I usually get a strong smell of exhaust in the cabin. In flight, I do not smell it. I can see on the cowl where the exhaust follows the lower cowl lip around to the area where the gear legs enter the fuselage. I suspect this is where it is entering and will seal that better during the ...

I don't have a digital tach in my airplane, but I believe the digitals take their RPM info from the mags, which shouldn't vary beyond what the engine is actually doing. A constant-speed prop equipped airplane would obviously be smoother than a fixed-pitch because the governor regulates the engine sp...

Re: Heated Pitot Cessna Drawing
I see in the Flypaper that the club may purchase a copy of the Cessna drawing for the heated pitot which would allow someone installing a heated pitot to skip the 337 process. The way some Feds are behaving nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd require a 337 to be filled out based on the defi...

Wing heaviness
My 170 also has a wing-heavy condition and I have also adjusted the eccentrics as much as possible. Still heavy. I spoke with a Cessna engineer who gave me a tip I haven't tried yet. When the elevators are re-installed, the bolt holes where the two meet up may be elongated just enough, causing the e...

Fuel quantity indicating
One other question (for tonight)...Just after topping off both tanks, I'll go fly. Upon levelling off, I glance at the left fuel gauge and it shows about 3/4 full! This is consistent and I fuel the airplane myself, so I know I'm getting as much fuel in as possible. Sitting on the ground, the gauge s...

Cleveland Conversions
I have heard of a Cessna bulletin stating that converting to cleveland wheels actually does NOT require using an STC & form 337. Anyone else heard of this? If so, what is the bulletin/service kit? Thanks!
