Ben you are required to establish that you are cleared through the class D (or C) airspace. Flight following and being vectored does not alleviate you of the responsibility though it would be uncommon to be vectored into or through airspace not owned by the controller without his getting prior clea...

A fine but critical point Ben To enter Class D airspace you must establish communications. That is considered done when, as you point out, the controller acknowledges you specifically by call sign. Communications has then been established and you can continue and enter Class D unless being told oth...

This is true John BUT you were NOT cleared through Allentown Airspace (which is a Class C for those unfamiliar) till you hear the words N3833v cleared into Allentown Class C airspace. Under normal circumstances you would have talked a Allentown controller prior to actually entering the Class C and ...

Here's one I don't have an answer for yet. You are flying VFR and are talking to approach control for a large class B airport recieving flight following with vectors through the class B (class B clearance given). ATC gives a vector heading/altitude that will send you slightly through a satelite airp...

They are blue because they have a tower. They are in Class E airspace. Communication requirements for towered airports in Class E are establishing two way radio communication (FAR 91.127). Since they are within the DFW Mode C veil then a transponder w/mode C is also required. Did I get it right? Di...

Tangent? You asked for regulation opinions, right? It was your first msg post. Posting a youtube about a completely different airplane is a "tangent". (just teasing) If we're going to go off on regulation tangents, here's a good regulation question that I was unsure of for a long ti...

Wow.. this really got off on a tangent, but that's why I love this site for talking regulations. You guys are really good! This all started because I wanted to know if I could earn PIC time when flying with my friend in his amphib on flights over to the lake. I think I can, so in that case, check ou...

Re: Answer

... An SEL-only pilot may land in water solo with an endorsement from a CFI. I'm curious to know the recommended text of that endorsement, and what FAR authorizes it. What if a bran-new student pilot decides his first private certificate is going to be SES instead of SEL? He would have to build 20 ...

Re: Answer

I got an answer I like from someone ..... -Solo flights in an experimental aircraft do not require additional ratings beyond sport pilot. Ben, the quoted statement above is wrong. The fact the aircraft is experimental has NO bearing on what ratings are required to fly it. The Sport Pilot rating has...

Answer

I got an answer I like from someone with 30 years experience as a CFI and 15 years experience working for the NTSB. Just thought I'd share it with you guys since I came here looking for an answer. -Solo flights in an experimental aircraft do not require additional ratings beyond sport pilot. -All th...

The percentage of each flight that is relegated to each class might fall in some "muddy water" area of interpretations, therefore most of the flight must be operated as a seaplane.   That "muddy water" is what I was hoping to clear up. I just got my tail-wheel en...

I will add the fact that the airplane is Experimental.

I know that you are not required to have all the ratings in an experimental if you are flying solo, but it is required for taking passengers. So that rule does not apply to this case.

Splitting PIC Time (FAR 61 discussion)

This really isn't a 170 question, but you guys seem to be really good when it comes to legal questions. It is my understanding that two pilots can split the PIC time of a single flight so long as their combined logged time does not exceed the total duration of the flight. What about in this situatio...

I hope this isn't a recurring trend. A T-6 just landed on US-41 on its way to Oshkosh earlier in the week.
