Re: lifting a plane
Just installed lifting eyes on my A with a little help from this thread. Because the skin is only 5/8" above spar block, a step drill starts to interfere with the spar block as you get near 7/8" so might go the holesaw/spade bit route if I were to do it again. I would be OK with that becau...

Re: Carpet or Vinyl for a floor covering
I put coin dot in mine. Made it 2 or 3 inches wider all round to go up sides. This collects dirt so it doesn't end up in belly. Probably in the 10 lb range. It is certified flame resistant. Tell me more about this, ... what brand?.. what is your source? My carpet was like fiber tape in the sun for ...

Re: Fuel Selector Valve 1950 170A
I am going through my '51 this winter and thought I'd add some pics. Coming apart wasn't horrible; going back together just might be. Can folks tell me if this is the quick drain kit that was typical? Also, you will notice some clever fellow in the ship's past had some brass glue to make the mountin...

Re: Dealing with North Sound Aviation
A little news as I am finally getting around to pulling my gear... As of 3/31/09: -PPOnk doens't do gear OH's and doesn't sell gear. -XP Mods doesn't exist anymore, (800) 819-9270 is disconnected. They have morphed into T&D Aerospace (509) 881-8919 and want $1500 for gear OH. -North Sound Aviati...

empty weight?
Trying to refresh W&B data and am a little confused re the empty weight of a 170. I thought CAR 3 aircraft were weighed absent any fuel or oil? FAR weights include full oil and unusable fuel. I assume I should come up with the latter. Was wondering because I'm coming in a little high at 1370 wit...

The first EAA STC has passed into public domain. Subsequently they got smarter and redid their work and produced a newer version which they can charge for. Petersen's STC never passed into public domain. But the bottom line (as I understand it) is if you have even a photocopy of the older EAA STC a...

autogas STC: EAA vs Petersen
From what I can see of the STC descriptions, the respective sources simply use different methods of determining the 87 octane rating. Petersen is RON+MON/2 and EAA is ASTM. Easy enough: I don't see the ASTM out here in Utah. But would that preclude me from using an ASTM supplier elsewhere?? Does it ...
